I had the same problem i change the bottom hose and the water pumps inside came loose replaced water pump....Also it has a bleeder by the top hose by battery get the air out.....
Wherever it was spraying water out of is a leak, a leak in your coolant reservoir is not good, I wouldn't be surprised if the reservoir has a leak...maybe at the seam. It is plastic on these vehicles.
It sounds like your previous overheating problem may have stressed or even damaged other parts that are involved in the cooling process.
Has the thermostat been replaced? It's an inexpensive part, if it's not opening fully, damaged or clogged water will not pass through it as designed to do and cause overheating.
Just my 2 cents as a 2003 Liberty owner, I bought mine brand new and have done all repairs myself and it is still running fine.
Cheers!
