Malfunction indicator lamp is on. Gas cap was tight not sure what problem is 2004 civic 94,000 kms.

when you turn on your ignition to the point before engaging the starter all your warning lights should light up. The Engine Check Light is very obvious, except they throw convention to the wind and show it as 'Service Engine Soon' lamp 'Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL)'.

Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) If this indicator lamp comes on steady or blinks while the engine is running, it may indicate a potential emission control malfunction. The malfunction indicator lamp may also come on steady if the fuel filler cap is loose or missing, or if the vehicle runs out of fuel. Check to make sure the fuel filler cap is installed and closed tightly, and that the vehicle has at least three gallons of fuel in the fuel tank. After a few driving trips, the lamp should turn off if no other potential emission control system malfunction exists.

Could be all sorts of things. Have a garage or a dealer read the ECU error code to see what is be flagged.


Might be as simple as the gas cap is not tight.

Error Code: P0966
Location:
-Pressure Control (PC) Solenoid B - Circuit Low
Possible Cause:
-Wiring short to earth.
-Pressure control (PC) solenoid.
-Engine control module (ECM)/Powertrain control module -(PCM)/Transmission control module (TCM) .

I tightened my gas cap and the light went off after 3 full days :--)

• P0340 - Camshaft position sensor circuit malfunction.
  
• P0457 - Evaporative emission control system leak detected (fuel filler cap loose/off)
  
  There is a bulletin #0398 posted on 05/12/2003 for P0457 - Malfunction indicator lamp (mil) illumination with diagnostic trouble codes p0442, p0455, p0456, p0457, p1442 or check fuel cap lamp illuminated with diagnostic trouble code p0457.

I'd suggest checking with your local dealer, as it may be a fix that is covered by the dealer.

I would look in the owners manual and check the fuses for the guage cluster.
also take the vehicle to a local parts store and they should be able to check the codes for you so that you can narrow down the problem.
and if the light goes on for a few days then goes off you might want to check that your fuel cap is tight.

The light could mean many possible issues. You will need to get someone to read the code to determine what is the potential problem. You have numerous sensors that can set the light off,

its either time for tuneup if haven't done one meaning oil change,spark plugs air filter,check ur fluids make sure their topped off, and or make sure ur gas cap is on tight. 80% of time its gas cap not on tight...

Damn near anything, or nothing.
You must pull the computer codes to know what.
No other way.

Make sure the gas cap in on TIGHT. The cap may be on snug, but make sure you turn it until you hear at last three clicks (indicating the the cap is TIGHT).
