ford focus 2002 wont start, wont tick over, just a slight whirring sound when key is turned. Lights etc all work but when key is not in ignition, the temp and petrol guage sit at half way but when ignition is turned on and lights up, they go back down to zero. Car does need petrol but it is not bone empty so really dont think thats the problem. Had a new timing belt fitted 2 days ago.... ford focus 2002 wont start, wont tick over, just a slight whirring sound when key is turned. If the battery is ok there could be one of two problems have you tried the spare key? it may be a problem with the immobiliser look at the red light near the time clock it should go out when atempting to start. second try tow starting or bump starting you may have a faulty starter motor do not try this to often or you could damage the cat. do you get any noises when trying to start such as a clicking ? this would indercate faulty solinode on starter hope this helps

If it runs you have one of 2 issues. 1. The battery is bad and the alternator isn't able to keep it charged (you will have to jump start it every time the motor is shut off). 2. Your alternator is bad and the battery is running the car (when battery is drained car will stop running) which is my belief as the battery light only comes on when the alternator isnt charging. Have the charging system tested at your local AutoZone/Advanced Auto parts store they normally do it for free.
I won't say its an alternator problem because the alternator only charges the battery when its on, And it should start with the jump cables even if the battery and the alternator are bad. your Issue is not clear. Does the car start when you jump it ?
when you jump start it it runs then you disconnect the cable and it dies? hope this is right. the alternator could be bad and the battery isnt getting a charge so it dies from running low on battery power.hope this helps
