SOUND LIKE THE THEFT SECURITY PROBLEMS. MOST OF THE TIME.THE IGNITION KEYS OR IGNITION SWITCH KEY LOCK CYLINDER WORN WHERE THE BCM AND PCM DONT RECOGNIZE KEY OR SWITCH SIGNAL.SO THE BCM AND PCM WILL GO IN THEFT SECURITY MODE.THE DEALERSHIP WILL HAVE TO FIX.BECAUSE IF THE KEYS , IGNITION SWITCH AND LOCK CYLINDER AND BCM HAS TO REPLACED.THEY WILL HAVE TO BE REPROGRAM USING DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT. NOT A HOME FIX.YOU WILL NEED TO GET FIX SOON AS POSSIBLE.BECAUSE FAULTY SECURITY THEFT CODE WILL SHUT DOWN VECHICLE FUEL SYSTEM WHILE DRIVING OR IT WILL GET TO A POINT WHERE CAR WONT START NO MORE.THIS FIX WILL COST ABOUT $600.00.

Testimonial: "Dear Fixya, Thank u so much for the corresponding my question. U'r excellent! and super! U cleared my frustrating and solved my problems for 100%. "

I have changed the ignition system 3 times. these cars are not worth the frustration. turning key to on position for 12 minutes till the security resets. then taking key out, putting it back in to start got old very quick. my greatest suggestion would be get a new car/different car

WELL ALL NEWER CARS HAS THE SAME THEFT SECURITY SYSTEM NO WAY OUT.IF CAR HAS LESS MILEAGE BE CHEAPER TO FIX CAR.NEW CAR PAYMENTS GOING TO BE MORE.IF CAR OLD HAS LOTS OF MILES. BEEN GIVING YOU LOT OF BREAK DOWN PROBLEMS TIME TO BUY NEW CAR.

How to reset anti-theft on a 2000 alero

The security, antitheft or lock picture/icon is a visual indication that something in the car's antitheft system is failing. In most GM cars and trucks there is a hidden system that most people are unaware even exists. From the moment you put your key in the ignition, there begins a constant line of communication between your key's security chip or transponder, to the ignition's lock cylinder, and then to the car's TDM (Theft Deterrent Module). These 3 parts are in CONSTANT communication. If the key is in the ignition, then these parts are sending signals to each other. The security light illuminates when that signal gets broken, even just for a second. When the signal breaks, the car misinterprets this as an attempt at theft and goes into antitheft mode. The car thinks its being stolen or hotwired because it is not getting that signal from YOUR specific key. This is why the security light turns on and shuts down your vehicle. This link explains it pretty well.

I have a 1999 Oldsmobile allero and I am having trouble with the theft lock, randomly my car will not start and then my security light will start flashing and I have to wait for about 15 min for the light...

You are experiencing GM passlock security system. Yours is starting to fail. When the system gets old it fails to communicate with all the parts of the system that need it. When the communication is broken, the car goes into anti theft mode and and turns off the starter and/or the injectors. After ten minutes it trys to connect the communication again, this is why it will work after a while. Go to this link, it has a ton of info and some ways to bypass this system so it will never happen again.

My 2002 Alero wont start and the security light stay on. ive tried turning the key on, waiting 10 minutes, turning the key off, and then starting it but nothing happens. nothing is working. what should i...

Since you've tried the 10 minute relearn process with no luck, Try this same process 3 x in a row without trying to start in between. Will take a little over a half hour. If this still does not work, and the security light is solid (not flashing) this indicates a bad TDM. (passlock security computer)(Theft Deterrent Module). A new one will cost about 700 bucks. But this entire system is able to be bypassed permanently. If all else fails, check out this link. Its full of info on how the system works, along with "do it yourself" ways to fix it. http://vatspasslockpasskeysecurityhelp.yolasite.com/

2001 alero, anti theft, starts wont then quits, left key in on position for 10min, now no power, friend told me to disconnect the battery that will drop the ECM? again now it wont even boost. please help

Make sure your battery is fully charged and good. Then leave the key on 'till the security light stops flashing (sometimes more than ten min). If it refuses to start or will not stop flashing, your ignition tumbler chip may have failed (requires tumbler replacement and re-set security again) Can't guarantee it will fix your problem, cause I can't see what else is going on from here...but that's where I'd go first!

Our oldsmobile alero wont start seems like not getting fuel

If the security light is flashing when the key is on then it is the passport 2 anti-theft system. You need to turn the key to the on position (one away from cranking it over) and leave it until the light goes out. Then turn the key off, remove it, then try to restart it.

Security light in 99 Oldsmobile Alero

There isnt a fuse for the theft system. You need to take the coloum cover off. Should be 3 screws and you will see all the wires in there. The ones you need are three togather. White Black and Yellow. Get the car started and cut the yellow wire. The theft light will come on and stay on but will bypass the theft system. If it is a 2 wire system you will see two little metal strips on the upper side of the key. You have to use a ohm meter and measure the resistance of the strip in there. Its a resistor used to tell the theft computer the key is in there. Anyway find out what the resistance is and buy a resistor from radio shack and look under the steering wheel for the 2 very small guage wires in a yellow cover....NOTE not the air bag wires. Simply cut those wires ( the 2 white ones) and on the set going away from the steering wheel strip the wires and put the resistor one one wire and the other end of it to the other wire....That will disable that system. If its the 2 wire and you have issues getting it simply take the car to a car audio place that does remote starts and for a nominal fee they will do it for you. My records show that it has the 3 wire system.
