Transmission in 1998 ford Taurus just stopped working. Was backing up into parking space and it felt like it went into neutral. but now it wont engage into reverse or any of the forward drive gears. It does have the proper amount of fluid in it, so I don't know, Any ideas what may be wrong?

Possible splines stripped in torque converter that turns transmission pump. Our 2006 ford minivan did this to me when I stopped to get gas. it would not move when i started back up. I cannot remember if scanner showed transmission pressure or if I had to hook a gauge up to find out. I basically had to replace torque converter, I did flush transmission cooler in case medal from stripped splines was circulated thru system.

SOURCE: 1994 Ford Ranger won't shift into drive

In 9 out of 10 cases when I see this problem in the ranger, it is the planetary gear in the transmission. It is made of the cheapest metal available. It breaks usually from going to park before the truck stops or switching from reverse to drive while still rolling. Just a Idea , But I hope it isn't that . Reverse will work fine for a while, and have no forward gears.

SOURCE: automatic ford escort 1998 will not shift out of "park"

There is a switch between the brake and the transmission. I forget what its called but unless you have your brake pedal pressed your car will not shift out of park. If you do have your brake pedal pressed there may be something wrong with the sensor.

SOURCE: 1999 F250 only goes in reverse, no forward gears.

I believe that reverse is operated by a brake band. So it seems to be stuck. It is operated by a piston, and the seal could have swelled and caused too much friction. But you could loosen up the adjustor so that it is disengaged, in order to get forward gears again. Perhaps you can force the piston to retract as well, once you drop the pan again.

SOURCE: my 97 escort wont go into reverse or neutral. I

I assume this is an automatic since you mention "Park". If so, it seems as if one of the planetary cluches is worn out (or you have insufficient pressure in the tranny). Either way, it is tranny rebuild time. Is the transmission fluid brown and burnt smelling or a nice bright red? Any particles floating in it?

I was driving my 2000 ford taurus when I came to a complete stop but when I went hit the accelerator the gas would not go.So I turn the car off and it would not start in park but it did start in neutral....

This Sounds Like The Linkage On The Gear Box Has Changed ,The Lever Is Not Reaching The Correct Position When it Is moved to park ,Drive, Etc.
Check The Cable ,Linkages From The Change Lever To The Gear Box

I have a 01 ford taurus whit p0705 transmission code and i have no idea what this mean

Code P0705 - Transmisson Range Sensor Circuit (PRNDL Input)
The transmission range switch detects the selector lever position and sends a signal to the TCM.

The park/neutral position (PNP) switch includes a transmission range switch. The transmission range switch detects the selector lever position when the shift lever is in the N or P shift position and sends a signal to the Transmission Control Module (TCM).

Symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)

Possible causes
- Open or short park/neutral position switch circuit
- Poor park/neutral position switch circuit connection
- Misadjusted park/neutral position switch
- Park/neutral position switch may be faulty

Have a 1998 ford escort and yesterday when I went to go to work I backed out of my parking space and only got about 1/2 mile before my car didn't want to go. I pulled my car in to a parking space I tried...

that most likely is your transmission fluid and you probably leaked out 4 to 5 liters , you must have a transmission line that has blown you will have to replace the leaking line and then add mercon 5 through the transmission dipstick the vehicle will have to be running to get an accurate reading keep in mind when you pour in fluid you have to wait about 1-3 mins before you can get an accurate reading due to fluid being inside the tube and when you pull the dipstick out it will read full, so pour in the fluid and the wait a bit start it and check it, the leak is most likely comming from a line.

Transmission wont shift, Transmission does not respond to shifter

Hello, hope I can help you. First off, you need to check the fluid level. Start the car, idling in park, and remove the transmission dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it, and remove again, and check the level. If it is low, add some to correct the level. Once you have the level corrected, see if you have engagement. If so, hopefully you're all set, if not, at this point, you have some type of internal failure, and will most likely be looking at an overhaul, or replacing the transmission.

96 taurus wagon goes to neutral when vehicle comes to full stop.

That would be your neutral park switch is bad or broken. If the shifter linkage is not aligned with the neutral park switch it will not work properly. Located on drivers side on top of Trans.
