My service engine soon light will come on and off while i am driving it. When it does come on, the car runs rough. Sometimes the light will come on though, and nothing will happen. I have replaced the o2 sensor, egr valve map sensor, new spark plugs and wires. Whats wrong??
The light indicates an error has been detected in the emissions system. If you don't have a scan-tool or code reader, then go to an auto parts store and check on getting the codes pulled for free. Autozone will do it. Post the codes back here for help. OR, if you prefer, I can post step-by-step info on how to pull the codes yourself without a scan-tool.The light indicates an error has been detected in the emissions system. sounds like you have a code in the computer that needs to be checked out which will send you in the direction to diagnoise the problem.you could have a couple problems.it could be a tps sensor,vacume leak,injector problem,etc.
it's not likely a bad o2 sensor would cause it to run rough, but the catylitic converter, which is what the o2 sensor reads the flow of, would cause the car to idle and run rough.If you take it to an auto parts store to have a diagnostic test ran on it( most major parts stores will do this for free), thecodes it gets would help pin point it alot better.
blue smoke on startup is generally from worn valve guides or bad stem seals on same (not really terrible as long as it stays the same) It will run rough for a minute 'till the oil in the cylinders is cleared out. Service engine light is pretty much on its own timer and does not mean anything but it's there to annoy you into going to the dealer. If O2 sensor was bad, it would eventually put the red check engine light on.
The best way to know what is happening there is to drive a GMC dealer and get them to hook in the diagnostic tool and read the computer memory for present faults.
Cheers
check engine light comes on when ecm detects a problem when information is out of spec.from 1 or more sensors.have ecm scan for problem code!depending on problem,sometimes ecm has bypass mode for some sensors,car will drive ok,or run little rough.but its up to u,if u don t feel safe dont drive it.oil pressure will vary with engine rpm,eng.temp.also,as long the gauges are in the good operating range!hope i could help!
a check engine light or service engine soon just means you are not meeting emissions. definitely not a big deal.
go to autozone and have them do a free scan and get the fault codes.
Also, try this first - disconnect the battery for 1/2 hour and see if it turns the light off. Drive for 10 miles and it may run rough until it relearns your engine controls.
let us know results.
