You are incorrect. on a 91 jeep cherokee the belt is adjusted pivoting the power steering pump assembly. loosen the top bolt on the PS bracket, the 2 bolts on the back of it, and the bolt holding the adjustment bolt tight (the long bolt threaded into the bracket under the pump on the drivers side. turn the long bolt (adjustment bolt) to tighten or loosen the bolt.

gah, typos ;) i mean turn the adjusting bolt to tighten or loosen the BELT. doh!

more information about your Jeep Cherokee can be found in the tech forums at NAXJA, a club for cherokee owners. google the name, you'll find it.

You missed a bolt to loosen. I loosened what you said. P/S pump wasn't loose. Two bolts front. One you can see ontop of the P/S pulley. The other, you can't see is under the pulley, slightly to the left. Both are 13mm. I'm a 1991 jeep cherokee 4x4 owner. [email protected]

How do I tighten serpentine belt and to what spec?

Your 1996 cherokee has a self adjusting tensioner. If it's bad or if the belt is worn, it might make a squealing noise. You cannnot adjust it. You can only replace the auto tensioner when it gets old and weak.

Replace serpentine belt for 6 cylinder 4wd

Loosen the power steering pump rear mounting bolts, pivot bolt and lock nut and then loosen the power steering pump adjusting bolt. Slip the belt on and tighten the adjusting bolt until you can push the belt in about one inch midway between the A/C and alternator pulleys. Then tighten the lock nut, pivot bolt and mounting bolts and that's it.

It helps to diagrams to go with the instructions. Get yourself factory service manual, promanuals.net has them for around 20$ or so.

2004 jeep grand cherokee limited makes a noise

Sounds like a loose belt, Depending on what engine etc., it may need to be changed or if you have adjustment, tightened. When adjustment or replacement done, is a good time to check all pulleys. If your not up to it, an adjustment should not cost too much, few minutes work in most cases, if belt needs changing, price of belt & a little more labor involved.
