The "service engine soon" light has been turning on and off for months. Finally the car stalled during idle. The only way to keep he engine runing is to keep he foot lightly kn the gas pedal. Meanwhle the "service engine soon" comes on and goes off. The exhaust smells rich or as if is not burning lean.
Must have a bad o2 sensor need to check with a scanner auto zone and advance auto parts do it for free.

the fuel filter or fuel pump would not cause the smell you described you could have multiple issues. the fuel filter could cause your acceleration issue but it would be very sluggish not intermittent.
auto zone and advance auto parts also loan out tools check to see if they have a fuel pressure test kit.
