Need to verify the timing marks on my honda civic engine i've lined them up like it shows but the engine still turns over like it has no compression after timing the belt the cam gear has the 3 lines on it to line up the middle line with the pointer and the outside 2 line with the valve cover surface of the head. i suspect possible valve damage but was told this engine would not suffer that fate if the engine jumped timing?

This engine is an interference will bent valve's, if the timing belt broke you have bent valve's as far as how you set the camshaft gear you did it right, the cylinder head will have to be remove to repair and replace bent valve's.

Most honda do have interference fit engines so there is that possibility of valve damage. try a compression test on all cylinders. compare readings and note any low compression or large variations from each cylinder. Make sure to disable fuel and ignition systems by pulling the corresponding fuses. Good luck

Advance the timing to to 17 degree BTC and that will give you a little more compression. What happened is when the intake valves open on a cylinder the gas is already leaking out of the exhaust valves (the bent valves) and when ignition fires up, there is no gas to burn. When you advance the timing (17 degree or more) the gas is ignited when intake valves just open to allow gas to enter the cylinder.

What do I do, I replaced the blown head gasket on my 1997 Honda civic and the engine is now vibrating during idling?

You need to:)
1. Test the cooling system to make sure there is no leakage.
2. Verify the timing is exactly set according to the manual using the procedures to make sure all timing points are set on the marks exactly. One or two degrees can cause rough idling but still let the car run.

3 Go over everything you did, make sure there is nothing disconnected like a vacuum hose, any wiring. (you can spray carb cleaner around the vacuum lines to see if you notice a change in the idle if it hits a leaking area, use caution, this is flammable and should only be done a few seconds at a time, then aired out.

good luck!

Why are my honda civic radiator hoses compressing?

A restriction (usually the thermostat) causes the water pump to pull water from the radiator. But with less coolant flowing out of the engine, it creates a vacuum in the radiator which collapses the hoses.

Where are the timing marks on a 1994 honda civic 1.5

On the Cam gear are three marks. On the face of the gear it should say "up", then you have three marks one at 3 o'clock one at 7 o'clock one at 9 o'clock. the one at 7 should align up with a mark on the block. Some have a raised semicircle and you line up the 7 o'clock mark on the cam with the far left hand end of that semicircle. Now on the crack end you have a mark at the 2 o'clock position and it lines up with a mark on the block. Do not turn the crank or the cam independent of one another, as the valves can be bent. Remove the spark plugs to ease turning the engine when needed. The engine will turn counterclockwise. Remove all necessary left hand front wheel, inner fender splash guard, covers, top engine mount. turn the engine until number 1 cyl. is at TDC compression stroke, and all timing marks align as noted. Remove the lower crankshaft bolt and pulley, and lower belt cover. Loosen tensioner bolt and push it out of your way and remove the belt. Put on the new timing belt in this order, crank sprocket, cam sprocket, water pump sprocket, tensioner. Belt must be tight on no tensioner side. Push the tensioner against the belt. Turn the engine 4 turns counterclockwise, until the timing marks realign, loosen the tensioner and turn the engine again 3 teeth, torque the tensioner to 30 flbs. reinstall all the mounts and covers. all should be good.

Can I time the engine without taking the bottom pulley off?? If so is the middle mark on the pulley TDC? (1994 Honda Civic DX 1.5liter single overhead cam)

You should remove the Crankshaft Pulley, because you have to remove the Timing Belt Cover to remove the belt, adjust tension, and line up the Timing Marks.

Here is the Service Guide for the Timing Belt on your 1994 Honda Civic 1.5l SOHC Engine:

Need the rite timing marks for a 1990 honda civic 1.5 engine

On the cam shaft gear there are two "-" marks on either side of the gear along with the word "Up" stamped on the gear. Turn the crankshaft so that the word "up" is on top and line the "-" marks up with the cylender head. On the pulley of the drive shaft there are two seets of marks one set of three that looks like "lll" and one set about an inch to the right of these that looks like "l l" the "l l" needs to be lined up with the timing marks on the lower timing belt cover.

198 honda civic will not start sputtered a little bit a few days before. replace spark plugs, dist cap and rotor. still will not start - only got fire on one plug

You must do a compression test the timing belt may have jumped a tooth,if you are only getting 100 psi or more on one cylinder I would try lining up the timing marks on the lower crankshaft pully to pointer and ensure that the camshaft pulleys are pointing to the correct line up marks get a repair manual to locate these marks on the engine and procedure to check, without more information I really am limited on how much I can help you.

How to set timing with light on 1999 honda civic

YOU CAN'T YOU SET THE TIMING WITH TIMING MARKS THAT ARE ON THE CAM AND CRANK SHAFT. ALSO IF YOU DO NOT DO IT PERFECT YOU WILL MOST LIKELY RUIN YOUR ENGINE IF IT IS WHAT THEY CALL A INTERFERENC ENGINE SO BE CAREFULAND MAKE SURE YOUR MAKSARE LINED UP! AND IF THE PREVIOUSE BELT BROKE YOUR MOTOR MY ALREADY BE JUNK. WHAT A INTRFERENCE ENGINE IS IS A ENGINE THATWHEN GOES OUT OF TIME THE VALVES HIT THE PISTONS AND BEND VALVES IF YOU GET IT TOGETHER AND IT MISSES OR WONT START YOU CAN CHECK THIS WITH A COMPRESSION TEST. IF A VALVE IS BENT YOU ILL HAVE NO COMPRESSION IN THAT CYLINDER GOOD LUCK
