This sounds bad, but I have 118000 miles on my 2005 Honda Civic Lx, and I don't have the money to do the timing belt maintenance. A few months back when I had the money to do the work, I called the Honda dealership close by and they told me not to worry about it that my year had a timing chain, well a couple weeks ago I found out otherwise. So, basically my question is, does anyone have any advice on what to do about this problem, I do not have the $550 (nor the money in general to fix this problem, and I am supposed to be making a trip of 1000miles next week!!) to replace it.

Make the trip, timing belts mostly break under hard acceleration,or someone hard on their vehicle, you sound like neither.

Just to help clear it up a little. The timing belt should be done at or before 100000km according to the Honda manual. The timing belt also runs the water pump which is behind the belt and requires the belt to be taken off for replacement. If the pump is leaking or you suspect it to be bad (ie no coolant or the bearings wobbly), change it because the cost of the pump is much less than to do it later. Also get your cam seal, crank seal, and belt tensioner bearings checked. Again, if you can trust your mechanic, he will know once the timing cover is off. Have fun, you should be fine if you don't push the engine too hard/ Too hard as to making it accelerate hard and driving it in the higher RPM, keep it with in the middle of the RPM range so as to not stress the engine any more then it should be. But you really need to replace it as soon as you can with the water pump to save you time and money. Good luck and keep to the suggested oil and oil filter change.

Does anyone know Honda's requirement for timing belt replacement on 2005 honda civic lx. I've seen varying comments on line, would like to know Honda's requirement.1.7L Thanks for any help or suggestions....

From the Owner's Manual: replace the timing belt @ "110k miles or 7 years whichever comes first". We have 73k on our Ex and have had no problems with the automatic ... in fact it is the smoothest shifting auto that I've ever driven. I did a fluid change (incomplete ... u can't drain the entire transaxle) at 60k which is the recommended interval for "severe" service.

My 2005 Honda Civic has what I think is a tappet noise for about 5 minutes when first driving off with a cold engine. There is no tappet noise when starting and letting the car idle before driving away. ...

indicates a problem hydraulic cam followers leaking down when let sit for a time
they can be removed and checked with a leak down test but for the years and the mileage , it may be best to just replace them with new units

1994 Honda Civic LX\overheating within 2 mile drive

Remove and raise upper hose at thermostat end and remove lower rad hose.
Fill rad with a hose and watch for flow from bottom rad hose and/ or bottom rad hose connecton.......water should fall though rad easily.
Honda rads are cheap.....any restriction....replace rad.

Remove thermostat....fill thermostat housing with hose and watch for water flow at bottom rad hose.
Flush good.

Remove heater hoses.......flush back and forth until a good flow is present "With heater control set to hot" if no or poor flow....replace heater core.

Stop leak can plug everything.

Also.......not likely causing over heating....but ....at your mileage,if you do not know if the timing belt has been changed.....CHANGE IT NOW!
Water pump is optional at this mileage.

Timing chain maintenance

It's actaully a timing belt, not a chain. But the mileage recommendation i believe is 60,000 or 90,000 miles.

2003 Honda Civic -LX Timing belt

90000 Miles on the Timing Belt. Do not let this go! A timing belt failure can cause internal engine problems.

Should cost around 200 or so, depending upon your local labor rates.

Good Luck!
