My sreering wheel is locked and the ignitionwont turn over
The front whells are locked and i cant get the key to turn over to start how can i fix this the steering wheel is locked also and what do i do??? its a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Re: My sreering wheel is locked and the ignitionwont turn...
IF this is the same problem as in the Dodge Caravan's, then put the key in the ignition and tap it with a hammer, big wrench, etc. Not too hard! My caravan does the same thing and I can jam the key in the lock and get it to turn fine. Eventually you will have to replace the igintion lock cylinder.

remove the switch , by following (old post) the FSM under steering
for Ignition switch removal.
this act , unlocks the lock.
one other way, is to destroy the cylinder, (ask a thief) and turn the guts
until it unlocks,
Check and make sure the transfer case is adjusted right If the front end was broke you would know it. Jack up one front wheel and put it in 4wheel drive but not lock and see if the front drive shaft turns if it doesn't you need to adjust linkage or if it's electric make sure the signal is getting to the transfer case. If it only locks front and rear jack up one rear wheel also and do the check. Most people with 4 wheel drive don't know they have two wheel drive One in the rear and one in the front unless you ordered a locking dif from the factory they don't come this way. Then you would have 3 wheel drive
On mine you have to push the brake to release the steering sounds like it is jammed turn key to on position then put in gear and back to park if it is automatic and try moving steering whell at same time to get it unjammed this is a pretty common thing with the focus
With foot on brake, and grabbing the steering wheel, pull harder while turning completely to the left holding steering whell there, start igntion, lock should release.
you going to have to play with the steering whell lock by rock steering wheel back and forth continiously while playing with the key at the same time jiggle the wheel and the keys.
Have you tried wiggling the steering wheel at the same time as you turn the key? Have you tried pushing on the gear shift lever, to make sure it's all the way in park?
is the steerin whell locked? if so wiggle the wheel and the key at the same time. if no luck the the key cylinder may need to be replaced. have a shop do it. the steering wheel need to come off. about an hour if you have the correct tools.
Did you leave the steering wheel turn to right or left? If so turn it to the way you left it as far as it will go then try to turn the key. Try this a few times to get it to key to turn. Also try rocking the car while turn the steering wheel and key might need another person. Cause: the park pin is ingaged and with the wheels being turned makes it hard to unlock steering colum.
