I have wondered why this happens many times in the past. You would think the marks should line up using #1 cylinder but they don't.
It has been a while but I think if you hook up to #5 ignition wire the marks will come up for you.You will need to undo the "spout" connector before setting it to 10 degrees before top dead center. The spout is a two wire jumper clip that should break out of the harness at the distributor.
Warm the engine up for a while so it doesn't stall as easy while you set the timing.

Testimonial: " Right on, timing it on #5 cylinder worked. I thought I probably had a bad damper but it appears o.k. "

By the way. The spout connector when connected allows the computer to adjust the timing. By disconnecting it you are adjusting base timing.

Glad it worked out for you. Does it run smoother?
    Thank you for the testimonial.

There is one set on the right hand side near the top of the timing cover, these marks are cast in the cover. These naturally are the WRONG marks. On the left side of the timing cover where you can't see them are the right marks. They are on a metal plate bolted to the cover using the cover bolts. The vibration damper also has two sets of marks, wouldn't you know it! There is a large square notch , nope not the right one . There is also a very thin scribed line on the damper, yep that is the right one. .
To do this right, slide under the engine and clean off the thin scribe line and paint it white and while you are under there you can see the bolted on timing mark on the cover there is a large triangle cut in the plate , that is 10 degrees before TDC the correct setting .Pull your distributor cap and crank the engine until the rotor points at number one cyl on the cap. Then see if you can see the alignment of the timing mark on the damper some how and the mark on the bolt on plate, its easier when the engine isn't running and you can stick your head in there without loosing half of it. Your timing marks should be some where near each other. Crank the engine to align the 0 degree mark and the mark on the damper, don't worry about the distributor position. Just line up the marks. Then go to the right side of the cover with the cast in marks( that you can see) and mark the damper with white something, paint even whiteout works. Now you have a new timing mark that you can see. Pull the spout, yes it is in the same harness as the distributor connector, its a gray jumper.Put the cap back on. Start the engine and use your new marks to set the timing at degrees before TDC.

Manifolds/gaskets go bad on this truck, usually have to replace both due to excessive exhaust manifold leakage & intake manifolds sucking vacuum. They warp badly, you're REALLY gonna love finding & replacing the emission pipes on the head. use LOTS of WD40, real 6-point pipe fitting wrenches, a small hammer to tap lightly with to aid in loosing & not busting these bloody pipes, LOTS of patience. parts , lots of parts. back to the Timing Marks, CLEAN all the front off, locate the Marks on crank pulley first & mark 0 TDC long line , 10 before or what half line, with white old style White out is fine. There should be a Hole for a factory Timing Probe & near that Hole , a Timing Pointer or Mark on the Timing Case. Highlight it withe the same White-Out. adjust as required

Cam shaft marks at TDC on a 1994 Toyota Camry 2.2L engine

generally to be honest with you ladies and gentlemen, dont trust any marks especially old vehicles,if youre mechanic you need to knw timing valve sequential by heart so that you can use marks as a cross check after everything installed. Example vw cam pulley comparing to an Audi cam pulley looks similar, same diameter even teeth gears are the same but differs in mark, the other mark at 12 oclock and the other at10 oclock.

which shows the timing mark on the cam pulley facing a pointer at the bolt hole for the cover at around the 10 oclock position
the crankshaft is at the top facing a mark ( circular recess behinf the pulley aligned with a hole at the 12 oclock position
the mark on the cam pulley is a dot on a tooth of the pulley at the end of one of the spokes of the pulley

How do I go about sitting the timimg on a 94 ford ranger lt pickup

On the 4 cyl engine, you line up the crank pulley with the timing mark and the cam gear with the pointer on the timing cover.
On V6 engines the cam and crank gear dots point at each other. 6 oclock for the cam and 12 oclock for the crank.

Timing chain marks needed for Audi A4 B9 1.8tfsi 2009 model. Engine was taken out and settings not marked. This is extremelyurgent. Please help

diagrams I have show a twin cam set up with 2 balancing shafts. The marks on the cam shaft point to (left cam shaft 11 oclock the mark on the right point to the 1 oclock position. The chain will have 3 black links-- the top black links will be at the timing marks on the shafts with the 3rd black link directly at 6 oclock facing a mark on the gear. The balancer marks both point to the 1 oclock position with black links on each and the 3rd black link will be facing a mark to the 7 oclock position on the crankahaft gear. Everything is done with the piston at TDC no 1 cylinder so get it there before you put the cam shafts in position or you will bend valves. Crank shaft gear is not keyed to the crank shaft. there are dots on the right hand balancer shaft gears and these dots will be as the 2 dots on adjacent teeth either side of a dot on the meshing gear. I suppose that is all as clear as mud but if you got this far then you will see the marks and marked links on the chains

Timing marks 1600 cc zetec engine

Hi the camshaft timing is two slots cut in the end of the camshafts where a locking plate can be inserted to hold the position of the camshafts the sprockets are not keyed and are a cone fit so dont undo them from the camshafts until you have locked them in the timed position
the crankshaft position should be marked on the pulley wheel and the front cover but are very hard to spot sometimes if you can get underneath the car its easier to spot with a torch from there
or if you remove the front pulley on the flat face of the bottom pulley sprocket is "D" on its side pointing to two marks at the top at the 12 oclock position is about tdc take care as the sproket is only pushed on a short way and can come off when uder belt pressur but is keyed so can be refitted easily or take a spark plug out of number one cylinder and use a long thin blade screwdriver to find top dead center by gently turning the crankshaft pulley until the screwdriver stops moving upwards and befor it moves down is roughly top dead center ,once you have top dead center found and the cams locked in position you have the engine timed and ready for adjustment or a belt change

I need to know the timing marks for the timing belt on a toyota highlander 2006 , v6 , 3.3 litre. the location of the cams, is it 3 oclock, 6 oclock, 12 oclock?

the timing marks for the cams are on the rear timing cover (behind the cam sprockets). They are very hard to see, especially the rear cam. Align the cam sprocket marks with rear timing cover. Because this engine is mounted at a 60 degree angle, you must use the marks. Rear cam should feel compression while front cam is free!!

Trying to find out where marks need to be to time a 1.6 liter 16 valve engine . replacing belt

There is One mark on the crankshaft pulley that needs to point almost straight down (line up mark on pulley with notch on the bottom of rear timing belt plastic cover piece). Both cam sprockets will have a notch stamped into them. these need to be pointing exactly at each other. I believe the rear cam is the intake on these engines and the front is the exhaust. When the notch is at the 3 oclock position on the intake cam, the exhaust cam needs to be at the 9 oclock position (the marks will almost touch each other). Make sure you rotate the engine over using a breaker bas on the crank pulley bolt and double (even triple check) the marks and make sure they stay lined up! This is an interference engine and if you're not lined up, get ready to put a new cylinder head on it. Also be sure to rotate the water pump pulley and line up its marks to keep the belt tensioned.
