I have a 93 toyota 4-runner with a 3.0 ltr v6, 4x4. i need to know if the automatic & standard transmissions are interchangable? im thinking of buying a 4-runner that has a stick-shift w/ a blown engine, and putting my engine in it.

A salvage yard could tell you through their interchange database. I would think the '94 has electronic shift points, doubtful about the '88. Check with an interchanger.
If it is a standard/manual shift transmission, the clutch slave or master cylinder is probably going bad. If you continue to drive it like this it can damage the transmission. I would get these parts checked out ASAP to prevent transmission damage. This is a minor repair compared to replacing the transmission.
If it is an automatic transmission grinding and not shifting, the problem will be inside the transmission itself, and it should be repaired or replaced.
There is an electronic module called ECT under the dash that controls the transmission ( a small computer), however if you had your vehicle serviced in the recent past the wiring connector (a 3 Pin connector) under the Drivers side (LHD) just before the T/case could have become loose or the wires broken, check this connector out.
