Hi, Tina.
What I would do is take the shims you have to a good machine shop and see if they can skim the surfaces down to the correct thickness. Other than that, maybe you can find shims from a different vehicle that will fit yours.
Good luck

SOURCE: 1997 nissan pickup 4wd, just had timing chain

Not likely. You have a 4 cyl engine with over head cam. It has hydrolic lifters. If it wasn't making the noise before he replaced the chain, then its something he did...or didn't do. If it was making the noise before, most common reason would be 1 or more lifters not pumping up. If you have a six cyl, no one changed the timing chain, (It doesn't have one!) The 3.0 6cyl has a belt.

You remove the head bolts from the outside inwards, criss crossing to the middle. This is the opposite of reinstall which is centre to edges.

1994 toyota 4runner v6 valve adjustment?

Shims are ONLY available from the Toyota dealer. The special tools are reasonably priced and can be found on EBay or elsewhere on the Internet. That said, I'm a professional mechanic. Even for me, the job is a PITA [difficult] This is not a job for an amatuar mechanic. It will be an expensive job.

You can't do this without a dealer to program the system to recognize the new key code. This requires dealer level tools.

My 2007 Frontier has 70,000 miles and the dealers mechanic said I need to replace my chains. A $1,500 job. Is that typical for that model?

They had chain issues I believe. Since the Toyota gas pedal deal,Nissan has stopped playing games on several known issues on Frontiers. Now,will they give you an updated chain. I wouldn't count on it. There are enough law suits out there, you may want to check it out.
