2001 Pontiac Grand Prix Knocking Noise - Drive Train? Hello, I would like and share a question about my 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix. There is a knocking like sound coming from the front on the car during the following situations: 1. When putting it into gear Drive / Reverse from a parked position, there is knocking sound or abnormal 'clunck' sound. 2, The same knocking sound. can be heard when pressing the accelerater while cruising down the street or Hwy.. It occurs and I let off the accelerater, then press down on the gas again. It feels like something knocking in the motor / transmission or gearing re-engages the drivetrain. Aside from the that, the car runs great. I can get over 500miles on the Hwy. on a full tank of gas topped to the max (17gals) . Mark 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix Knocking Noise - Drive Train?

see if the noise goes away in a right hand curve, if it does its probably wheel bearing, because you will be lifting weight off it in the turn, also check to see if you have a bubble or seperation in the tire.
Try turning the wheel and seeing if the knocking noise gets worse or better.Usually when you get a knocking like that or a clicking when your turning, you need to replace the CV shaft on that side.Sometimes a wheel bearing will make a click but if you jack up the car and can hold the wheel from top to bottom and can wiggle it and feel alot of movement that is the wheel bearing but it is probably the CV shaft making that knocking noise.Good luck
not very specific, however, if it really loud, that may suggest internal engine damage...not good. also, if it sounds more like clicking which gets faster/slower depending on the speed of the engine, that would be you lifters = check oil = ensure correct level. or, switch to proper grade of oil if you have deviated from what the manufacturer recommends. it would help if you could tell me exactly where the "knocking" sound is coming from and what the vehicle is doing when you here the noise. oh, if it makes a knocking/pinging sound when you are under heavy acceleration or going up a steep hill (high load) check your spark plugs and try using a little bit better gas....
The rod knocking is caused by loss of oil pressure. Did the oil light not come on? That light is red, red means stop. Do not start this engine again until the problem is corrected.
You can remove the belt from the super charger and see if knocking persists. Car will run w/o super charger. Plan to spend about $300 for a remanufactured super charger.
