Sometimes you have to back up about a foot to disengage the hubs.

SOURCE: 4 wheel drive

Park or neutral is always a safe bet. If its electronic its probably safe up to 20mph as long as your not accelerating. I wouldn't go much faster than 60mph in 4x4. if you really need to use 4x4 you shouldn't be going too fast anyways.

SOURCE: front hub to lock in to 4 wheel drive is locked

This is common. the locks due tend to freeze up and need either a greasing or replacement. I do suggest automatic locking hubs that you don't have to turn yourself. You can get the part almost anywhere

My 4 wheel drive won't disengage on my 2002 ford excursion

Something worth trying. Many vehicles can be dis-engaged from 4 wheel drive by putting the vehicle in reverse and backing up 35 to 40 feet.

I put my 2001 excursion into 4x4 high for just a minute one afternoon. That night I was going out of town on a wet road and heard a roaring sound. At first we thought it was a flat tire. Once we checked...

When you take the vehicle out of 4X4, you should always back up for around 50 feet to fully disengage the 4 wheel drive..........Hope this helps and also the electronics on the transfer case may be corroded or bad.

Transfer case still sending power to front wheels on 2000 excursion. HELP! I hear the "clunk" when its put into four high and low and when its disengaged, hubs will not turn at all, I try to turn...

It sounds like a problem with the drive shaft knuckle its a sealer unit and not serviceable See if when you turn the axle back and forth you hear or feel clunking noise or feel movement in the sealed joint Iwould check the conduition of wheel bearings this kind of a problem tends to create a lot of heat so a over hall of bolth front wheels mabey brakes and bearings is likely along with any axle problems you find It sounds like you waited to long to address this things like don't braek over night they give waring signs make noises viberate you need to look and listen. repairs tend to be much cheaper and easyer if you do. It still sounds like you can save it but you need to do everything that it needs good luck and sorry its not easy fix but it needs work

Wont disengage out of 4 wheel drive 1998 ford ranger first time its stuck in 4 low we have backed up turned switch numerous times shut it off and restarted

Be sure to put the truck in neutral, while engine is running, while you disengage from 4 wheel drive (low) to 4 wheel drive (high) and then finally to 2 wheel drive. It is critical to shift transmission into neutral when switching out of 4WD Low, as indicated in your owner's manual. Hopefully, this will help to FixYa problem!
