Park or neutral is always a safe bet. If its electronic its probably safe up to 20mph as long as your not accelerating. I wouldn't go much faster than 60mph in 4x4. if you really need to use 4x4 you shouldn't be going too fast anyways.

Once you turn off four wheel drive back truck up at least 20 feet. This should disengage.

This is common. the locks due tend to freeze up and need either a greasing or replacement. I do suggest automatic locking hubs that you don't have to turn yourself. You can get the part almost anywhere
