neicieneici, No, this is not true. You can purchase a crankshaft sensor from any auto parts store. Just provide for them the year, make, model and engine size of your vehicle and they can provide a sensor for you. If you ask, they may tell you where it is located on the engine making replacement easier for you. I don't know why the mechanic told you this. Good luck with this.
this sensor is located in the front of the motor near the crank shaft balancer, or in the rear by the cylinder head where the transmission meets the engine.
Try replacing the air an fuel filter - also tap on the MAS (mass airflow sensor) which is located between the air filter casing and the intake (throttlebody) - if the car dies, hesitates it may need to be replaced.
First, do the air and fuel filter. If this does not solve the problem, then purchase MAS cleaner. Pull the unit out and spray the inside generously with the cleaner. Re-install and drive. If the problem still exists, try replacing the MAS.
If not this, it could be either the crankshaft sensor, cam shaft sensor, harmonic balancer, O2 (oxygen) sensor(s), or the catalytic converter may be plugged.
Take the car first to an auto parts dealer (Napa, Baxters, etc) and have them run a diagnostics test to determine any codes that will let you know what components may be malfunctioning, not working, and need replaced.
Please let me know if you need further assistance.
The temperature gauge sensor is what you need to replace. It is also a good idea to replace the thermostat, but is not necessary.
The sensor is usually located on the top of the engine on the driver side. It will (should) have a single wire coming out of the top of it.
Locate (purchase) a repair manual or ask a parts dealer representative to help locate it's exact location.

On my 02 Excursion with the 7.3L Diesel, the Cam Position Sensor is located at the front bottom of the engine on the passengers side. There is one electrical pigtail plug that is attached and one bolt holds the sensor in position. It may be located in a similar location on your 05 Ex. I do not know where the crank sensor is located. I hope this helps.
