For the glass, they can repair and strengthen it by sucking superglue into the crack under a vacuum like they do for windshield chips. For the trim, they are available on eBay.
If your crack is shorter than a $1 bill, it can be repaired, I recommend Safelite auto glass. If it is greater than that, it will need to be replaced. If replacement is needed, there are many coupons that will cover the deductable upto $100 (I think)....check in the phone book.
The windshield is actually a piece of safety equipment designed to hold you inside the car in a horrific accident. Once the windshield has a crack, the integrity of the safety equipment is compromised and should be replaced. Repairing it is not suitable. If your seat belt was ripped in half, would you feel comfortable sewing it back together? I hope not.
It is not common for it to split for no reason. Possibly something hit it when it was parked, heat affects how easy it breaks as well. They probably wont cover it under warranty because it was driven off lot in one piece. Your insurance company will cover it though but meay be cheaper in long run to fix yourself because of insurance premiums. Also it could have started as a tiny small crack and split down middle real quickly. Is it hot where you are at. Try to ask dealer though if they will replace it, it doesnt hurt to try. Some will do it just to maintain you as a customer.
check out the junk yard for the bumper it will be a lot cheaper and only 4 bolts on each side of bumper. sometime if the crack isnt big you can put a dab of crazy glue on the crack to keep it from spreading but it s smarter to replace the windshield
Ok... put the duct tape down. And back away from the truck... just kidding.. I wouldn't recommend duct tape. or hot glue... If you have a visible crack or hole, drain the tank to below the crack, clean with a little vinegar and water, and lightly sand the plastic housing. Place a small patch of plastic sheetrock mesh tape over the crack and then... Use a bit of epoxy that is recommended for use on plastics. Mix up a small batch, spread over the crack and over the mesh.. Let dry and refill. Don't worry about pressure, because the tank isn't under pressure on most cars...
A small chip can turn into a crack during sudden changes in temperature extremes. You take the tip of a pen and follow the line of the crack and wherever it stops in the chip area it started from. Glass will be a little more forgiving of a small pebble etc. impact when at least 2 or 3 inches from the edges of glass where it is more rigid since that is where the windshield is bonded to the body.
