You will have to drop the tank to gain access to the tank unit seal to change. while there check other seals like the vent sensor.

yep i seen it in happen .i was at a gas station a guy drove car to the gas station on empty.he fill his tank up .could not get it to crank .some cars you have to restart fuel pump when run out of gas. like chrysler.you use a scanner. but chervrolet you run low over heat damage the pump.it has to stay submerge gas to keep it cool. check fuel pump pressure.it should be 41 - 47 psi.

Was fuel smell present before you had fuel pump replaced? If yes I would sugest you drop tank and see if fuel vent hose is plugged forcing fuel back pressure line to vent through cap. If fuel smell was not present before you replaced fuel pump and seal. I would suggest you drop tank back out and check all fittings and hose conections. also if you still have old sending unit you could check to make sure they are exactly the same. As Sometimes you have to pull relief valve from old sending unit and install it in the new one, as some sending units wont have one in it. and some will have one that is regulated at a different fuel pressure. hope this helps Vic

2003 Altima smelled like gas on the outside near right rear wheel. Asked mechanic to take a look and said it was fuel pump, had a crack in it. Would cost $550 parts and labor. Found video online on how to change fuel pump under back seat. Ordered part online for $150, shop wanted $350. Changed fuel pump in about 30 min if that. Couldnt believe how simple. Mechanic was right, when I took off plate under seat, could see gas on top of fuel pump. Fixed.
