My 1993 Toyato Camry won't go over 45 mph when it wants to. Some times it runs over 45 and sometimes it doesn't go over 45 mph. It has 82,000 miles. I have changed the Fuel filter, I have checked all the sensors and throttle. When I changed the fuel filter my car worked for about a month and then the problem came back again.

Check your fuel filter and fuel pump. Your gas tank may have a later of slug which is clogging the fuel pump and filter. Lastly, have your catalytic converter checked. The older ones can get restricted, the screens melt and the pellets bunch up restricting the flow. of exhaust thus you will not be able to go over 45 mph.

I have changed my full filter and checked my fuel pump, I have not checked my catalytic converter I think that can be the problem

Worn out & blocked Exhaust Converter

That would be about 80% of the possible reason
There may be others as well (multiple problems)

I hope your were doing all your own work &
guessing-- while throwing parts at it

I would hope you did not pay for that lack of
diagnostic whatever-- to find a problem

I was planning to take it to the Toyota dealer to see if they can find the problem but do u suggest getting a new converter? I have no car experience I've done all this myself with the help of youtube.

  • Anonymous Nov 25, 2014

I do not suggest a dealer EVER Too expensive No I Never suggest replacing ANY Parts You find the problem first Until you have a problem you have no need for parts A local shop & be part of the solution Some shop install parts & never have no idea how to diagnose the very product they work on

  • Jiuliana Gonzalez Nov 25, 2014

I believe you are right about the converter I will have to replace it myself with the help of YouTube, thank you and do you happen to no a lot about cars? Just wondering

  • Anonymous Nov 25, 2014

Under a perfect conditions a converter will last 14 years Few do On the newer vehicles that are driven & never worked on they are ruined in 7 years by cylinder misfires

  • Anonymous Nov 25, 2014

50 years doing my own work & once owned a trans repair shop

  • Anonymous Nov 25, 2014

More questions-- Keep in mind the idea is to find a problem then the fix may be obvious Your Converter may just bolt one,do not know Have to look at walker exhaust site for the parts You may have issues with rusted bolts on taking it apart

  • Anonymous Nov 25, 2014

Having changed the fuel filter--I would change the exhaust converter, spark plugs & air filter Then you keep an eye on the egr system if you still have issues

  • Anonymous Nov 25, 2014

Also the oxygen sensor i do them every 100,000 miles after looking at data They slow down In your case it is just too old You will have better fuel control with a new O2 Sensor Try Full Syn Oil on your next oil change Mobil 1 at wal mart or similar oil

  • Jiuliana Gonzalez Nov 25, 2014

    What's the egr system ?

  • Anonymous Nov 25, 2014

If you have a timing belt verse a chain they get replaced at 90,000 miles top or every 6 to 7 years That breaks the engine is ruined

  • Anonymous Nov 25, 2014

    Google it --Egr Valve

  • Jiuliana Gonzalez Nov 25, 2014

I have a brand new timing belt, oxygen sensor, air filter and spark plugs. Sorry about all the questions and thank you so much for your help :)

  • Anonymous Nov 25, 2014

Your good to go Do the converter I rarely ever tell someone to change parts that is what inexperience folks do & then still have a problem You converter is almost all that is left for the not going over 25 to 40 mph very well unless light on the gas

  • Jiuliana Gonzalez Nov 25, 2014

For a girl i think I have a done a pretty good job so far, I will change the converter then, thanks again

  • Anonymous Nov 25, 2014

For a girl your doing very well I wish I did that well on all questions but some folks hate me

  • Jiuliana Gonzalez Nov 29, 2014

i have came across simler problems in the past so im going to give you a list of four main suspects number 1; a broken or pereshed vacuum hose at the trottle body or inlet manifold.2 a blocked injector 3 a fuel injection system fault 4 a disconnected /leaking or perished crankcase ventilation hose. Before you try any of these by a can of fuel cleaner and run it through your system remember a small piece of dirt half the size of grain of salt is enough to cause this problem good luck.adrian

You learn the vehicles Systems,Test, then Replace,if you have a failed component.

Work on the Misfire Issues.
Then you lean O2 Codes will go away.

Not a the plugs.

Think lean---Vacuum leaks,EGR Valve leak,EVAP System leaks, anything with a hose that lets air into the intake system.
Exhaust System leaks,near sensors

Sounds like a dead spark plug or faulty wire, or even out of time. Start with changing plugs. No change, do the wires. No change check the timing belt. It may have jumped a cog. As for the slow to warm up part, the misfire won't help that problem, but you may need to change the thermostat if it doesn't improve once you get it running on all cylinders.

Hi, my first recommendation would be to take the plugs out and visually inspect each one and check to make sure they are properly gapped, if they look fouled at all i would replace them without hesitation. try throwing a set of NGK plugs in the car to fix the misfires. other than that you may want to look at the wires. good luck joe
