I have a noise coming from the rear of the car. The noise gets louder upon acceleration and most noticeable between 30 & 40 mph, a real wine.

I had a problem with the Pinion Seal twice, it was leaking fluid drip by drip. I had the seal replaced both times by CarMax where I purchased it. That was around 45-50,000 miles, it now has 99,800. Haven't seen any fluid on the driveway or garage floor since. How do I tell if it is a Wheel Bearing or Pinion Bearing? Could it be coming from a Driveshaft U-Joint? There is no clunking when put into gear, but at 50 or 65mph, if I take my foot off the gas and then back on I hear a definite clunk. Thanks for any help.

I would say since you lost fluid some time ago with the other
issue, that the wheel bearing or both axle bearings ran dryer
than they should have for too long

I would do both axle bearings & pull the rear diff, wash out the housing & at least visually inspect the gears, etc & make sure
you use the correct gear oil & go with synthetic

The drive shaft is your call

That is not an expensive repair, but they should be balanced

The increasing noise would be an axle bearing
The whine the differential bearings
The clunk the drive shaft ,more so than the diff

If it was mine-- I would do the drive shaft, axle bearings &
diff bearings in one sweep & be done with it

BUT your paying someone

I'm just buying parts wholesale & doing the work,
other than the balancing of the drive shaft

When you do a pinion seal your not replacing the crush
washer inside, thus the repeat problem, fluid lose & now
worn parts that should have been avoided

My used Saturn ion 2003 making loud clicking noise when idling and not accelerating

You buy a 10 year old car that isn't even made anymore
and know it has issues

Do you not have a repair shop you use for many years that has
been around for decades

You need a shop to go thru the entire car & fix ALL problems
regardless of cost, not us guessing at things

Not to get up to speed could be a gas filter ,most likely worn
out & blocked exhaust converter & I could write a book

All it's issues can be diagnosed & you should spend about $1500
if ALL problems are properly tested & resolved

Now you got the entire suspension, all fluids, brakes, tires & on & on

When I buy any vehicle I put it on stands for 3 weeks min & go thru it

On a new car i spend a week a year going thru the entire car

I take brakes apart every year

I check all data every 4 months with professional scan tool software

My car sounds like a small airplane when i accelerate

Have a trained diagnostic tech listen to this noise, as you can imagine diagnosing a noise on this computer link is really impossible, you need to hear it first hand.

I can feel friction while driving above 15 mph.

If you have a bad wheel bearing then you will have a vibration that you will notice. If that is the case then you have a bad wheel bearing.

If you had a hole in your muffler it would be loud all the time and be even louder upon acceleration. You could check this first by getting under your car while its running and see if exhaust is coming out where it shouldn't be.

Loud engine noise at certain speeds

could very well be a timing issue if it sounds like a rattling or a very poor grade ofuel. If you are using regular fuel, try putting some premium in next fuel up. It should be repaired mconyuinued driving can cause damge.

Rear end noise?

This sounds like ring and pinion noise, new bearings and a gear set will cure the problem.
