Why is my car overheating all the time?

I have been changing the ant-fluid and watching the car, have the heater on high and car still overheats after 45 min... now, tonight the car overheated shut off and i seen smoke, i checked the radiator and it was cold, it looks like the fluid came out underneath, cant see it, but tomorrow i was gonna look, hopefully its a hose i gotta change. anyway, my car has problems, but i still need to drive for a couple weeks, i have to have foot on gas and brake when slowing down or car will shut off.

That my friend would be a heat shield, happens all the time, there is a slight chance that I could be wrong, but it is going to be either a loose heat shield, or an exhaust clamp. If you jack it up, and are able to get under, look at all of your clamps, and shields above the exhaust. Start playing with them, and you'll find the one. Hope all goes well.

The radiator cooling fan relay has most likely failed. It is underneath the air cleaner on the frame rail just behind the radiator. NO cooling fan = overheating. This is the first thing i would look at. Best way to tell is when the van gets hot see if the cooling fan is on. You will hear it running if it is coming on. It will set a code for the cooling fan relay also.

SOURCE: over heating

It is very likely that the thermostat is stuck closed. This will prevent the coolant from circulating through the radiator.

It is also possible that your radiator fan is not coming on.

If you need more help, post a comment and I will reply again.

My car a Mazda 2.0lt 1986 model keeps on overheating during a jurny we overalled the head and fitted a new head gasket but it keeps on overheating what's wrong

When you replaced the headgasket did you ensure that there were no cracks in the head? I know you say it was overhauled, just trying to cover all the bases. Did you change the thermostat when you replaced the headgasket? Is your radiator plugged or possibly your heater core. Start the car with the rad cap off and watch as it warms up. Once engine gets to temperature you should be able to see the fluid move in the radiator. If it overheats before that happens then your thermostat is sticking.

Overheating! The van has new radiator, fluid, cap, heavy duty water pump, tsat, fan clutch. BTW the heads were redone not to long ago.

Did you change the thermostat? If not opening properly or far enough, that could be the cause of your overheating.

Use heater full blast with windows open to add additional cooling till you locate the source of the problem.

1997 ford expedition overheating problem truck warms up fine heat works good then heat goes cold and temp gauge jumps from normal to overheating i have changed the thermostat twice water pump fan clutch...

This might sound like too simple a solution, but after owning 5 expeditions, I think I may have an idea.

It is possible that the cooling system is simply not full of fluid. If, when changing the thermostat twice and other service, the system was not sufficiently bled or burped, this can happen. What happens is that people do these repairs, and then fill the radiator, but fail to completely flush the cooling system. My son had the exact same problem on his Mazda 3 (Mazda was owned by Ford then), and flushing his cooling system solved his problem.

Think of it this way: If your heater works fine, then goes cold, that usually means the heater coils which the air blows over have no hot fluid in them. As for overheating, your thermostat opens when your engine reaches a certain temperature with the intent to exchange the too-hot fluid with water cooled by the radiator, but if there is only air, or insufficient fluid in the engine after the exchange, you will overheat.

Ask your mechanic to flush/burp the cooling system completely. I hope this works.

1998 Saturn sl 16 twin cam engine overheats.

It could be either the radator or the timeing is too far advanced. Did you put a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze? To much antifreeze vers water will also cause overheating. Non Exhaust.

Car drove great one day but the next day it started overheating after driving about 5-7 minutes. Had the thermostat changed, the coolant reservoir and cap changed, coolant changed twice, hoses checked. ...

ok, is it losing fluid? check the floor board by the passenger seat, up under the dash, is it wet? Your heater-core may be shot. The core is tucked up behind your glove compartment. If it's plugged, water won't circulate and won't be able to be cooled, causing it to overheat.
