Locating wiring for reverse

Installing a reversing camera & monitor - part of the process is to tap into the wiring from the gear box for when reverse is selected, camera will be activated. While switch is easily located, I cannot figure out how to remove it and subsequently tap into the wiring at that point. Therefore would like to trace wiring to a more accessible point to tap into.

SOURCE: Reverse causes fuse for instrumental cluster to blow

Yes there is a reverse light back up switch located on the side of the transmission it will be the only 2 wires going to the tranny. There might be a short in the switch itself or the power wire to switch might have a bare spot where it might be grounding out on the vehicle somewhere.

Im trying to instal a back up camera on a 20008 gmc canyon and would like to know if it makes and difference which black wire I tap into on the reverse wires.I know the light green is the positive.

Most back up lamp sockets have just 2 terminals for a single filament lamp.

It's not unusual to have more than one wire per terminal. All wires that are connected to any one terminal are electrically the SAME - so it doesn't matter which you tap in to.

I can't tell from your photo if the brown wires all go to the same terminal (but I suspect with 99% certainty that they do), but you can always check the wires by running the engine, put it into reverse, set the parking brake and turn the engine off - but leaving the key on - while in gear (if you can't do this yourself - you'll need someone to put it in reverse and step on the brakes). The back up lights should be on. Use your tester to be SURE you have 12VDC between the GREEN and one of the BROWN wires. Use those two wires for your 12VDC supply circuit to the camera.

Why doesn't rear camera work when the car is in reverse?

Either the camera is bogus or power is not getting to the camera when you throw the car in to reverse. Check the power line tap off for the camera- may be by the reverse backup lights..

How to fit a g427 gator reversing camera to a vy commodore. Confused to what wire to connect for the power to the monitor, and where that wire would be located.thanks Dale

The main active / positive you can pick up direct from a connection under the dash or from the fuse box. Its easy if you have a 12volt test light, you can locate a permanent or switched 12 volt when the ignition key is on. The viewer is usually always on when the ignition is on. The camera picks up power direct from the reversing light. Use a crimp connector or solder direct to the terminal which supplies power to the reverse lights. That way the only time the camera will operate is when the reverse lights are on. The tail and reversing lights usually have a common neutral or negative wire which is connected to the body of the car. The other wire is the one you want. That's the active wire that supplies power when reverse is selected.

"Life wire??" I don't know what you mean.
Usually, the backup camera will derive its power from the positive lead of your backup lights, so that it only turns on when you're backing up. You can use a standard wire tap to derive positive (+) from either backup light, and use chassis ground for the negative (-) lead of the camera.

How do you find the reverse gear wire from cab area; when you put in reverse the reverse lights come on- I need to hook up a monitor to reverse gear...

the switch is on the gearbox ,i wouldnt even bother looking for the other end in the cab unless you find the loom running down one side at the front footwell and you can locate the colour of the wire in this big bunch ,unless of course that as this is a 2011 car it may not have a wiring loom as such but a bus line type system with a transistorised switch in the back like the new F type jag .Happy motoring and leave well alone is my advice
