My 02 s60 jerks into gear after slowing down for speed bumps or to make a turn. the dealer offered an upgrade to the transmission with only a 50/50 chance of it being effective and the possibility of an immediate turn for the worse if the upgrade didn't succeed. With all of the other routine maintenance items that have come up, what do you think?

There was a software update for this car, #30646691 to solve certain transmission issues. Not sure if that's the upgrade you were referring to. Also, the have been several cases of a dirty or partially plugged valve body in the transmission causing similar issues.
Hope this helps.

Does your RPM's dip from about 1,000 to just a tad below 500?

If so...try cleaning out your throttle.

Be sure not to spray throttle cleaner directly into the throttle, but on a rag and wipe away. Use something to hold the throttle plate open and use a small brass brush, dip into the throttle cleaning solution, and start to scrub away some of the built up soot.

Afterwards, wipe it down till you see a rather shiny throttle.

SOURCE: Volvo S60 sensor ?

Sounds like an oxygen sensor (there are two). I had a recent problem where I had a rough idle and my S60 continued to stall out. Turned out to be the rear oxygen sensor. After replacement, car idles nicely and car drives normally.

SOURCE: 2002 Volvo v70-Transmission is shifting hard in lower gears

Find a transmission servicer that is not afraid of tackling a Volvo problem. This is probably why the car was for sale in the first place. Good luck!

How do i change transmission speed sensor?

It is located in the tailshaft housing of the transmission. You simply unbolt the retainer, un-plug the wires, and pop out the old sensor. Stick the new one in, bolt down the retainer, and plug in the new one.

The most common fault with these electonic transmissions is the input speed sensor usually fails causing all sorts of erratic behaviour i suggest replacing it first they are only about $50

Transmission jerks

One possibility is that the speed sensor is going out. When that happens the computer gets bad information and thus makes bad decisions. When the car goes into 2nd all of the solenoids are actually off. That is so if there is some kind of problem the transmission gets no power, then it still has P, R, N, 2nd. It would be kind of weird, maybe, to see only the 1-2 shift being affected but I can't really think of anything else that could cause that kind of problem.

I had the same thing! It was a computer issue. It only cost me about $35.00.

Transmission Service Required 2001 Volvo S60 T5

Hi,

These cars had a few issues with the transmissions. Sometimes upgrading the software and flushing the transmission will help, sometimes a new valve body will fix the problem, but often the transmission will need replacement due to internal failure.

The first step is to have a shop read out all the fault codes, read all the service bulletins and tech notes from Volvo regarding the transmission problems and then make a decision based on all of that information.

Good Luck,

Bret

2002 Honda Accord - slow engine start and jerking

Most likely a dirty idle speed control system follow the guidelines below to clean it.

Throttle Body Cleaning on vehicles without electronic throttle control (most 2003 and down)

You can in most cases repair this slow speed stall or unstable idle by cleaning the engine throttle valve and the idle speed control valve using a product called CRC Spray Throttle valve cleaner. Spray the cleaner into the air intake of the engine with the hose removed from the throttle body, the engine will try to stall so hold up the idle speed manually. Once you have used up about 1/2 can of the cleaner stall the engine out while spraying and turn the key off, disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 minutes and then reconnect and drive the car for a about 25 miles of varied driving modes. If this doesn't cure the problem you may need the fuel injectors professionally cleaned by the dealer service dept.
