COMPUTER CABLE HARNESS IS MAKING CONTACT WITH EXHAUST MANIFOLD, HEATING AND BREAKING AISLANTS. IF NOT, SOLICITE YOUR MECHANIC TO RE INSTALL THE MODULE THAT IS INSIDE THE DISTRIBUITOR AFTER CLEAN THE REAR CONTACT VERY WELL, CAPTION COIL MAY BE DEFECTIVE TOO. CHECK KNOCK SENSOR BECAUSE A DEFECTIVE ONE WILL CAUSE THIS PROBLEM TOO. IT'S A COMMON FAIL IN THIS MODEL OF CAR

SOURCE: I have a well kept 91' Chevy Caprice V8 5.0L TBI.

It's very common for these engines to develop a vacuum leak around the base of the throttle body. You can check for this with a stethoscope or a can of aerosol carb cleaner. Also, IAC valves are a common problem, but easy to clean before you replace it. Remove it and use the carb cleaner and a brush to remove the build up, also the crud inside the IAC orifice. Next clean the throttle butterfly valve and throttle bore thoroughly with carb cleaner. If this doesn't help, remove the egr valve and try and poor a little paint thinner through it when you're holding it upside down, it may weep a little through the pintle but it should not obviously allow the paint thinner to flow through. If all of this fails to help, you'll have to get your hands on a scan tool and read IAC counts at idle to see what the computer is trying to do. If the counts are high...above 50, the computer is trying harder to open the IAC to keep the engine running because of some kind of problem, usually mechanical. If the counts are very low...below 5, the the computer may be trying to counter a vacuum leak that is providing most of the idle air, which is unstable and can cause the stall.

Hope this helps.

Testimonial: "I added more comments for the first poster but maybe you can put your second though also. I checked the EGR and took it off for a closer inspection, also took out the IAC cleaned it with rag with some solution and brushed it. My question is, how far out should the needle be or how can I tell when the IAC is warn out. thanks ."

SOURCE: 1998 Astro code P0102 low

Try cleaning the TPS and IAC( idle air control) valve .also clean the throttle body with throttle cleaner. Then see, if that is helping. If not then MAF needs to be replaced, as the error code is triggering towards the MAF.--------
The IAC valve is screwed in to the side of the throttle housing (where the gas pedal hooks up to the engine). You'll need to remove the interior engine cover(dog house).Torx screws for the covers, 2 bolts on floor. and bolts against the fire wall (You can use a long extension with a swivel socket at the end).----------- This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Put a lt1 engine in 1994 caprice it skips and wont hardly go up hills and back fires

Hello! are you using the harness for that year LT1? the fuel air mixture is controled by the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor, the Throttle Positioning (TPS) sensor and the Oxygen sensors...When you put your foot in it without O2 sensors there isn't any control over fuel/air mix and ignition advance if the MAP and TPS aren't connected...I'm assuming your using the LT1 ECM...Guru...saailer

P0123 Just put new Tps and it is showing this code now can adjust the TPS?

DTC P0123 - Throttle Position Sensor/Switch A Circuit High Input
This code means that the the car's computer has detected that the TPS (throttle position sensor) is reporting too high a voltage. Were codes deleted after this job? This is a code for TPS voltage high.

The sensor voltage should never be greater than 5volts. It normally reads .5 to .8 volts at idle (closed throttle). The orange and dark blue is the signal wire, black and light blue is the sensor ground, and the violet and white is the 5volt supply wire. You will need to back probe the signal wire to find the value. It is possible the signal or ground wires are open. Or the PCM is faulty.

1994 Chevy Caprice Classic -- When my car is in park it idles high. Also, when I am in drive ,maybe stopped at a light, then let off the breaks to go, I don't even need to step on the gas, it will...

You might have a possible vacuum leak. open the hood, let the car idle and listen closely for a hissing noise. Possible cracked or broken vacuum hose. Is the ck engine light on? Or possible TPS (throttle position sensor), IAC (idle air control valve). I would check it for a vacuum leak first, if you do not find one take it and have a scanner put on it. Autozone and O'Rielly's will do this for free. Hope I sent you in the right direction. TJ

Changed tps now car idles very high, will not idle down

The throttle positioning sensor must be adjusted, it's not just a bolt on application. This should be done by a qualified mechanic as it is a very sensitive setting

How do I adjust idle speed on 1989 Jeep Cherokee

the base/curb idle is not adjustable because of the renix system it uses, but if its idleing to low or high i would check the tps (throttle position sensor)located on the right front on the throttle body.if you have an ohms meter you can check it to make sure it is getting voltage with the key on.

Adjustable throttle position sensor

I'm assuming you have the 3.3l v-6. When I look up the part, it seems to have slotted holes. Therefore, it is designed to be adjusted after installation. If your tps has these slotted bolt holes, adjust it to satisfy the settings in the test procedure below.
  1. Remove air cleaner. Disconnect the TPS harness from the TPS.
  2. Using suitable jumper wires, connect a digital voltmeter J-29125-A or equivalent to the correct TPS terminals A and B.
  3. With the ignition ON and the engine running, The TPS voltage should be 0.3-1.0 volts at base idle to approximately 4.5 volts at wide open throttle.
  4. If the reading on the TPS is out of specification, check the minimum idle speed before replacing the TPS.
  5. If the voltage reading is correct, remove the voltmeter and jumper wires and reconnect the TPS connector to the sensor.
  6. Reinstall the air cleaner.

1992 geo metro 1.0 engine seems to flood and idles high can't adjust idle it's low as it goes and still idles high timing is right on any suggestions?

You might also check the single injector, had a friend's that the fuel pressure regulator had been messed with and was over-pressurizing the injector, that weakened the injector allowing it to flood at idle and also when cut off (the injector was leaking)

I have a 85 toyota celica, it wants to idles up and down tps is n

I would think that the TPS is not adjusted correctly. Move it until the idle stops fluctuating and advise how it runs.

The TPS does 2 things...It tells the computer the opening of the throttle plate, and it also sends a signal to the computer when the throttle plate is closed. If the TPS has the closed throttle switch activated, and the throttle plate is open, the ECU will fluctuate the idle up and down.
