How do I go about replacing the timing chain on a 2000 ford Taurus with a 3.0 engine

The power steering fluid has nothing to do with the backfiring. Need to know why you think the timing is off. is there something else? If you have not played with the timing, backfire could also be an electrical cross fire issue. Have the compression tested to make sure the timing chain is not the issue. If the compression tests good, all the valves and the timing is working. Recommend you look at the spark plug wiring and replace if wet or damaged.

97 ford Taurus runs ruff backfires

I would suggest you start with the basics. Check your wiring on your spark plugs to ensure they are in the right order. If you can grab an OBD scanner, I'd start with it as well. It can reveal many mysteries. Your running rough usually sounds like a timing issue. If there are over 100,000 miles on the vehicle, the timimg belt will be suspect.
Best of wishes.

2001 ford taurus, 3.0 vulcan motor. just rebuilt the whole motor, backfires out of the intake, seems to be out of firing order. i triple checked my work and can't find the problem. whistling sound of...

Back firing out of the intake is because the valves/cams are not set right. When you did the timing belt . did you set the crankshaft mark at top dead center of the compression stroke. If it's at the exhaust stroke this would cause backfiring and violent shaking.
