The normal causes of different colors of exhaust smoking are:
. black smoke = over fueling
. blue smoke = burning oil
. gray smoke = coolant / water
In your case, check the spark plugs for oil burning - If they are wet with oil, check the oil seal bonnets on the valves, or the piston rings. A compression test may not help you determine if it is a piston ring issue. You may have an oil ring issue and good compression rings. No oil on the spark plugs may not tell you if the exhaust valves bonnets are leaking oil since the oil could be burning after the .

Your issue could be a few things. Simplest first would be the PVC valve. Other issue would be valve seals, valve guides or piton rings. The blue smoke is from your vehicle burning oil

When you say "sometimes", whad do you mean exactly? When cold? When warm? When accellerating?
White exhaust smoke (which has a sweet smell) is often an indication of a blown head gasket. You'll need a compression test or test the antifreeze against exhaust gas contamination. Although the compression test will tell you more about the contition of the head gasket.
Where exactly does the white smoke come from under the hood? Maybe there's a puncture somewhere on the radiator hose or heater hose and the antifreeze sprays on the exhaust? Please check. There still is a tiny bit of hope it's not the gasket...

Blue smokes come out tailpipe when i start the car but stops afte

Helllo there
Symptom: Gray or blue smoke from the exhaust. You notice gray smoke coming from the exhaust when you start your car. The smoke may or may not disappear after the car is warmed. If it is, it is less noticeable. The smoke may have a bluish tint to it. Possible causes:

  1. The engine's piston rings may be worn.
The Fix: Replace piston rings. (Generally not a DIY job)
  2. The engine's valve seals may be worn.
The Fix: Replace valve seals. (Generally not a DIY job)
  3. Damaged or worn valve guides.
The Fix: Replace valve guides. (Not a DIY job)
Symptom: Engine uses more oil than normal, and there is some smoke from the exhaust. The oil level is low between oil changes. It appears that the oil is being burned by the engine because of the smoke in the exhaust. You may or may not notice the engine doesn't have the same power as it used to.
Possible causes:

  1. The PCV system is not working properly.
    The Fix: Replace PCV valve.
  2. The engine may have mechanical problems.
The Fix: Check compression to determine engine condition.
  3. The engine's piston rings may be worn.
The Fix: Replace piston rings. (Generally not a DIY job)
  4. The engine's valve seals may be worn.
The Fix: Replace valve seals. (Generally not a DIY job)

My 1999 turbo diesel escort has got a fuel prob iv changed the fuel filter, and it still juders, trys to stoll and blue smoke comes from the exhaust iv also added a injector cleaner to the fuel. please help

Sounds like the turbo seal is leaking just from the symptoms but the blue smoke can also be valve guides or valve seats. It can also be the piston rings that have seized to the piston body.

It is time to save yourself a $75.00 shop charge and buy a compression tester. (make sure you have the Diesel compression test adapter also) Then check the compression on all cylinders. If the compression is good then your looking at either turbo or cylinder head repairs. The blue smoke is telling you it is time to do something as it will be sitting on the sidelines come the next SMOG test.

I would like some advise on my saab se turbo please my car is blowing blue smoke ive been told it is my turbo if so could it of done any damage to my engine

IS the smoking extremly heavy ? Extreme heavy smoke where you cant see behind the car would indicate turbo. If this is the case no engine damage should have occured. The turbo on these cars are oil and water cooled, The heavy smoke indicates a worn seal in the turbocharger is leaking oil directly into the exhaust system and burning there. Catylitic and oxygen sensor damage may occur but engine damage is unlikely.

Blue smoke from exhaust

Blue smoke is a sign that oil is being burnt in the combustion process. It is normally a sign of high engine mileage. Definately a compression test would be in order to try to pinpoint the cause. In addition to high mileage it could be something like a broken piston ring or a valve not seating properly. It might also be possible that you turbo has a bad seal and is putting oil into the air as it spins. This problem should definately be looked into soon. Hope this helps.

have compression check done on all cylenders. sounds that it could be seeping and burning this new anttifreez. can burn out pistons if so. if you have a turbo have your seals checked as they could be hardend and cracked causeing seepage. also note if your oil or coolant levels have been coming up small amounts short, this could tell about the same as the comp tests
