Transmission and Service Engine Soon light

While driving my 1997 Ford Taurus all of a sudden the speedometer needle drops down to 0 and when I come to a stop and proceed again the car hesitates as if it won't shift into gear. After a few seconds it will shift into gear but speedometer won't work and I have no power steering. It will do this intermittently while driving and the speedometer will work again and then the same things happen over again while driving. I've been told so many different things that I'm confused and afraid to go to a garage for fear that this will end up costing me a fortune which I definately do not have. Any suggestions. Also the service engine light stays on continuously.

It might be your vehicle speed sensor. It affects your speedometer, your cruise control and your trans shift points. Also, your throttle position sensor (TPS) affects shift points.

1997 ford taurus wont shift when hot

If the check engine light is on you should get the codes checked for free at someplace like autozone etc. This could be the torque conver clutch solenoid or the speedometer sensor that causes this.

96 volvo 850 speedometer somtimes works then it drops to 0

Two questions: Is your odometer working? If not then it's probably a broken gear by the stepper motor that Emissionwiz mentioned. Is your ABS and/or TRACS light on intermittently or constantly. If so that is a common sign your ABS control module has gone or is going bad. This usually happens before the speedometer starts acting up. Either one of these will start intermittently and finally end up with the speedometer not functioning at all, and both are pretty common failures with this model.

96 Ford Taurus Speedometer Drops to Zero

have the fault codes read
the speedo gets its signal from the VSS ( vehicle speed sensor) and that sensor also reports to the transmission control module
So check for a problem in that area

Speedometer works somestimes

it is the gear in your speedo cable and the cable is not hard to change it normally goes to your front wheel back to your transmission put the truck on ramps put a stop or something behind the rear wheel and then you will see what i am talking about.
