2002 mustang makes rattling sound when accelerating...

Car makes a rattling sound from the engine compartment when accelerating. I've put the car in park and neutral and revved the engine up and it doesn't make any sound. Doesn't feel like I am losing any power just a really loud rattle. 71,000 miles 2002 mustang v6 auto.

Ok it's 11 years old . If the clutch has never been replaced they do break, plus if it is a 5 speed,5.0 it also could be the thrust being witch is located in the block. The spline alines from it! It is made of brass so it goes bad. If you have an automatic tranny IT could be the tork converter! Anyway sounds like you need to pull the inspection plate(5 speed) or the tranny(auto) and do a complete visual! Need more info to know for sure! thanks and good luck.

Possible bad motor mount(s) --only thumps or rattles when power is going to the wheels.

Rattles could be anywhere in a car. Most of the time it is a bolt that has loosened and allowing something to move back and forth. Suggest you try to localize the rattle to which area of the engine from sound and then push and pull on items and see which one moves in that area.

Most of the things that would rattle, are not things that would cause over-heating, so I wouldn't worry on that account.

That means there's no compression at all... Check the engine block. Piston might need replacement and block rebored or re-sleeved.

Sounds like crappy gas. The 289 may not like pump no-lead and the rattling sound you are hearing may be pinging / knocking.

as for the rattling sound have you checked the heat shield on the catalytic converter, mine was loose and was causing a rattling sound when it was at idle, and would go away as the rpm's increased.
