98 nissan 200sx electrical not working

The fan, wipers, tail lights, headlights, radio...nothing works. They all went out when the alternator went out last week...had that replaced by a friend and still nothing works. Also replacing starter this weekend.

  • Mallory Weaver Feb 19, 2014

Battery is charged, and the alternator is now holding charge....the car only starts when bang on the starter now. Still no electric.

Check the main fuse in the engine bay there is 2 one is 80amps check that one. as for the starer the solinoid is stuck if you have to hit it to get it to work.

  • Mallory Weaver Feb 19, 2014

Russ, if the solinoid is stuck that means i need to completely replace the starter, correct?

yes it does but some times it can be that the piston has not been used in a long time. if you take one of the side screws out and spray some wd40 in the hole and shake it around inside it could just be surface rust on the pin. have had a few of the on second hand motors. get stud in damp area for a long time and not used.

SOURCE: Beetle 1999 electrical problem

The problem is you're having trouble with your '97X' 12V system which powers all of the things you've mentioned. There are many problems for this particular problem. First and easiest is a bad relay - you can find this relay underneath the dash on the driver side you can straight out replace it or you can test it to see if it is actually the problem (you'll need a multimeter to do this). If that doesn't fix the problem it could either be bad wiring or a bad ignition switch. To check the wiring you'll need a multimeter as well.

I had this problem and had a problem with the ignition switch. I ended up bypassing it altogether and manually turn on the 97X system using my headlight switch - you'll need to know how to solder. If you're interested I'll post a photo of my mod.

Wipers stay on, no signals, no highbeams

Sounds like a bad headlight switch causing an electrical short. Take that one in. Don't try it on your own unless u have the electrical knowledge. good luck

97 Nissan p/u, dashboard,tail-lights,cabin lights,a/c not working

there should be a smaller fuse block with larger fuses. one should say either main or alt either way they are fuses that are larger and you can see through the top. if they do not come up easily, do not force it. some are attatched below with screws. the one you are looking for will probably come right out.

My nissan 200 sx headlight wont work have canged

Check fuses, Get a tester and see if you actually get power to the lights. If you do get power and the lights don't work anyway then it is likely the light switch located on the steering column( has blinker, and light switch together). common Nissan problem.
