The fan, wipers, tail lights, headlights, radio...nothing works. They all went out when the alternator went out last week...had that replaced by a friend and still nothing works. Also replacing starter this weekend.
Check the main fuse in the engine bay there is 2 one is 80amps check that one. as for the starer the solinoid is stuck if you have to hit it to get it to work.
Russ, if the solinoid is stuck that means i need to completely replace the starter, correct?
yes it does but some times it can be that the piston has not been used in a long time. if you take one of the side screws out and spray some wd40 in the hole and shake it around inside it could just be surface rust on the pin. have had a few of the on second hand motors. get stud in damp area for a long time and not used.

The problem is you're having trouble with your '97X' 12V system which powers all of the things you've mentioned. There are many problems for this particular problem. First and easiest is a bad relay - you can find this relay underneath the dash on the driver side you can straight out replace it or you can test it to see if it is actually the problem (you'll need a multimeter to do this). If that doesn't fix the problem it could either be bad wiring or a bad ignition switch. To check the wiring you'll need a multimeter as well.
I had this problem and had a problem with the ignition switch. I ended up bypassing it altogether and manually turn on the 97X system using my headlight switch - you'll need to know how to solder. If you're interested I'll post a photo of my mod.

I have a 98 Saturn SL1 from time to time it would not start, it wouldn't even try. I knew the battery was good. It turned out to be the cranshaft position sensor.

Battery is charged, and the alternator is now holding charge....the car only starts when bang on the starter now. Still no electric.
