It could be the key switch or the wiring for the turn signal switch.

could be lots of things, looking will find it, look for the burn marks and BINGO. guessing is a waste, look , find, see, discover truth. its just wiring, can can just be a burned connnector. (corrossion) or the wires to the ignition switch.

Id have already took it apart and found what smoked.
and why. ID the the actual wire , conn, or switch that smoked
then see if someone put the wrong fuse in that circuit. (bigger is bad)
its and old car, expect stuff like this, and more to follow.....
entropy , always wins...

2000 MAZDA 626 IGNITION SWITCH

I have the exact make, model, year in the repair shop right now with the same symptoms. Horrible screeching noise after starting the vehicle, and smoke coming from the ignition area. Most likely it is a short in the ignition switch. It could have also affected the starter module but I would start with the ignition switch.

Smoke coming out of back of steering wheel no

Hi:
I would guess that the most likely suspect is the ignition switch,,,not the lock, but the electrical switch. Most can be bought for less than $40, and not too hard to change. if you can get one.
A good source of help for you is a one year subscription to your Nissan, available at : www.alldatadiy.com It is worth the money , and helps you fix things, step by step.

Abs light on smoke from steering wheel computer and radio went out

sounds like the ignition switch just punched out. You should install a new switch assembly. It is a little tricky but should be able to do it yourself.

Smoke coming from switch -flashers continue -- removed the furniture from around the switch but cannot get the steering wheel to come off the spline shaft -- any trick to it? Car is not worth spending too...

Removal of steering wheel ,,,, Loosen lock nut but do not take off completely. Grab wheel at the 3 and 9 (clock face ) position and rock alternately from hand to hand while applying pulling force. Feet firmly planted and back nearly in back of seat .
Some smoke may be experienced from a greasy/ dirty contact but NOT a smoke like signal as described, Overheated contacts or terminals will be clearly evident if symptom is old . Good Luck
