Started with codes 0171 & 0174. Changed upper & lower intake & IMT valve seals, spark plugs, and all 4 Oxygen sensors, also cleaned MAF. drove about 50 miles and light came back on with 0430 code (Catalyst system efficiency below threshold Bank-2)
When this question was post, the car was 8 years old, mileage unknown.
One suggestion that was not made seems the obvious one to me, and that is to check and or REPLACE the Oxygen sensors.\, first.
Inspect the connections to the sensors. They can corrode and the connection become intermittent and/or "flakey". A little work-over to get6 some bright shiny metal to ensure the connections can do wonders. If it throws the code again (after clearing it), replacing the oxygen sensor[s] (with a QUALITY replacement, not the cheapest that can be found at a discount auto supply store!) just might be the ticket.
Short of cleaning or replacing the catalytic convertors should that fail to work (not the easiest job on the X-Type, but hardly anything is, and I can say that as an owner of a 2002 one), the suggestion posted here by George Geer is the next logical step, and a proven "fixya".
Oxygen Sensor Is It Really Bad How to Tell if You Need One O2 TestRepair...
Tech Tip of The Week 2003 Jaguar Type PO171 PO174
This code is not uncommon with the X-Type, a dealer will recommend replacing the Cat. very expensive. get a 1" spark plug extender and drill a 1/2 hole through it and screw it into the lower O2 sensor hole for bank 2 (rear of the engine) and then screw the O2 sensor into it, reset the code and you should be all set.

eficiencia del sistema de catalizador iferior al umbral
SOURCE: need to pass emissions test,
Yes it can be determined by the DTC (Data Trouble code). If the DTC is P0420 (catalyst system efficiency below threshold Bank-1) then the side of the engine with the #1 spark plug and cylinder is always Bank-1, and the O2 sensor that monitors the catalyst efficiency is usually after or (post) of the catalytic converter.
The #1 cylinder is located at the front spark plug on the right or the passenger side of the vehicle, so Bank-1 is on the right side of the vehicle, and the O2 sensor that monitors the catalyst efficiency should be located after or (post) of the catalytic converter. It would be the post right O2 sensor.
There is also the possibility that the catalytic converter is actually starting to fail, and if changing the O2 sensor and clearing the DTC does not solve the problem them the catalytic converter is most likely faulty.
