Torque Settings - Cylinder Head

The torque sequence and specifications for the cylinder head bolts on a 1998 Ford Ranger 2.5L gasoline engine are as follows:

1. Tighten all bolts in the sequence shown below to 22 ft-lbs (30 Nm).8 4 1 5 \ ' / ' / 7 3 2 6
2. Tighten all bolts in the same sequence to 45 ft-lbs (61 Nm).
3. Tighten all bolts in the same sequence an additional 90 degrees (1/4 turn).
4. Tighten all bolts in the same sequence an additional 90 degrees (1/4 turn) again.

Ensure that you follow the sequence and torque values precisely to prevent uneven tightening and potential head gasket issues. It's also crucial to use a good quality torque wrench for accuracy. 1. Tighten the cylinder head bolts in the sequence shown. Using the 4 step torque turn method, tighten according to the following values:

• • Step 1: All to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.)
  • Step 2: All to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.)
  • Step 3: All to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.)

CAUTION: Do not use a torque wrench for the following step.
Step 4: Turn an additional 1/4 turn

• Step 5: Install and tighten bolts (1-10) in sequence shown, to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) .

1. Tighten bolts (1-10) again to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) PLUS 1/4 turn in sequence shown.
2. Install main bearing bedplate to engine block bolts (11-20), and torque each bolt to 28 Nm (20 ft. lbs.) in sequence shown.

Connecting Rod Cap Bolts 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) + 1/4 turn

if you just put a head gasket on there it came with torque specs most do.. if not call the parts store..

Stage 2 = 90 degrees
Stage 3 = 90 degrees

Since you didn't say which engine you have, I've pulled torque specs for 3 different engines. Also, since I can't include a diagram showing the relative locations of the numbered head-bolt locations, it would be a good idea for you to purchase a vehicle specific repair guide that will show this info.

Take particular note about the TTY (Torque to Yield) bolts used on 2 of the 3 engines shown. It is said that new head bolts MUST BE USED when head is replaced or re-installed to obtain the proper torque.

B2500 4 Cylinder

Cylinder head instructions for Audi A4 1.6 (1998)

Tightening sequence:


Renew cylinder head bolts: Yes
Stage 1 - Tighten: 40 Nm
Stage 2 - Tighten: 90 degrees
Stage 3 - Tighten: 90 degrees

Tighten in sequence to 29ft.lbs then tighten in sequence to 58ft lbs. then loosen all bolts. Then tighten in sequence to 33ft lbs. then tighten each bolt in sequence 90 degrees then tighten each bolt again 90 degrees

BMW cylinder torque setting all models

According to my service manual as follows.

Cyl head to engine block (torx e12 M10 bolts)

Stage 1 30nm (22 ft – lb)
Stage 2 + 90 degrees
Stage 3 + 90 degrees

Cyl head to lower timing chain cover 10nm (89in – lb)

The tightening sequence is from inside to outside crossover as normal. Loosening sequence is from outside to inside crossover. Remember to set torque wrench at low setting and work gradually up through the whole sequence until you get the desired torque.
