I have a 2003 ford explorer, my 4x4 flashes from time to time. As a today I tried to push the buttons for 4x4 high , nothing happened. I can tell it is not in 4x4 high. I do have 4x4 auto , although I was sliding all over today in the storm when I usually don't. what could be the problem??
Try inspecting the transfer case motor and any electrical attatched to it first.

Before I pulled anything off I would start checking fuses. More than likely the fuse you'll be looking for will be under the hood. But I'd go ahead and check all of the fuses just to be sure. ( A blown fuse will either be smokey looking, or you'll be able to see a broken piece of wire in the middle of it). If that is not the problem then more than likely a relay or the control computer for the 4x4 is messed up. Generally, if there is a mechanical problem with the transfer case, or the servo motor that changes it's gears, the 4x4 indicator lights will flash. Since they are not flashing I believe your problem is in the electrical system. If it is not a fuse, I recommend having a mechanic look at it. Merry Christmas!

I had same problem on my 2002 explorer. Its either the computer module, or the electric solenoid on the transfer case. In my case it was both. The computer module I had done twice in 14 months.

I just had the same exact problem. The ABS light was on constanly, and the 4x4 high light flashes about 8 times, turns off for about 2-5 minutes, then flashes again for another 8 times and keeps repeating. In addition, I was also hearing and feeling a grinding and clunking noise going in reverse, and the steering wheel was difficult to turn. I changed a bad hub assembly on the front driver side and everything went away...fixed! I wouldn't let anybody tell me that the ABS system and the 4x4 system are not linked together. In fact, my local Ford service department assured me that I had two separate issues. Well, I only had one issue and it was a bad ABS sensor. I hope my exprience helps you.

try checking the transmission fluid it does this sometimes when it is low, if not take it to autozone they can run a code check for free and tell you why it keeps doing this!
