The various gears will all have some kind of "timing mark" on them but every engine is a little different. Best thing to do is to by a manual that details your specific engine's settings. While you are in there it is always a good idea to make sure your tensioner is working correctly before putting it all back together.

How to change a timing chain on a fuel injected v8

Same as any other v-8 dis-assemble the front of the engine to get to the timing cover. Loosen the oil pan bolts to allow the timing cover to be slipped out. unbolt and remove the timing cover. Turn the engine over by hand until the dot on the crankshaft gear( the small one) is at the top 12 oclock position, and the dot on the cam gear(large gear) is at the bottom 6 oclock position remove the old cam gear and old chain. Install new gear and chain with the marks in the same places. Re assemble engine. DO NOT be tempted to just put in a new chain, replace the chain and cam gear as a set, wear on the cam gear will cause the chain to be slack, which in turn causes the cam timing to be late.

Timing chain setting for 89 Firebird

Yes, there are two timing marks, one on the crank gear, and one on the cam gear. The crank gear mark needs to be at the top, and the cam gear mark needs to be at the bottom (lined up w. one another).

Adjusting the timing on 1988 firefly

Slack in the timing chain. Some of these car came with a fibergear set instead of a metal gear set. You will have to pull the water, then the timimg chain cover. You wil have to replace the top & bottom gear on the motor, plus the new chain. This usually will come in a set. You will also need a time gear cover set, gasket kit. There are 2-marks to line up on these two gears to set your time with, (timing marks).
