I have a 1990 firebird that up till now has been running like a champ. Has never given me a problem starting but last thursday morning, I tried to start it up to go to work and nothing happened. I get power to everything but the car will not even try to turn over. I tested the battery, checked all the cables and connections, then I replaced the starter...still absolutely nothing.
I don't know if you fixed your problem yet but the fusible links will be near the altenator. They are should be black in color and an inch or so long. They will be on the positive lead(s). Have you tried starting the car by jumping solenoid on the starter to see if the starter even attempts to engage?
I can almost guarantee you that it is your ignition there are two fine wires that come out of it and they are not hard to break, your key is not the problem but since you have the V.A.T.S. system on your car you will have to take your key to a G.M. dealer there are 15 different keys and they have a machine that will them wich one you have. The price is about $115 for the cylender and 1 key.
Did you try to start it in neutral? could be park neutral switch.

Yeah I tried starting it in neutral and park because i thought the same thing. Then i thought it might be the security chip on my key had gone bad. I took it and had it tested, and it turns out that the key is in perfect working order. I talked with my mechanic and he said that it could be the ignition switch, or 1 of the 2 fusable links that run from my ignition to my starter. Problem is I cant find those links for the life of me. I have searched high and low and still havent found them. I am going to search again this thursday, but if i cant make any progress I am just going to break down and have my mechanic take a look at it.
