THE MOST COMMON CAUSE OF THIS KIND OF SEVERE HESITATION IS THE MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR (MAF), IT WILL NOT SET A CODE IN MOST CASES. SEE PHOTO OF TYPICAL SENSOR

I'd start with a computer diagnostic first which can be done free at AutoZone usually or for a price at other car part stores.

If you don't get any error codes, then my next step would be to verify the fuel pressure is within spec using a fuel pressure gauge. There could be a leak somewhere in the fuel lines. It could also be an electrical short in the engine harness or possibly a bad ignition module since they trigger the injection in many cars and can have an intermittent problem.

If that all checks out, next verify that the air flow meter is working correctly.

This is a good start, let me know what you find when you check all of the above options. Changing the fuel pump and the filter was a good start and would have been the likely problem in most cases. Very strange though.

What the dealer said, I assume they base it on probably testing the car while you had it there. What they said is what I would have checked next and so if they said that distributor and a sensor is bad, then they probably are. Did you get any error codes when having that done? The sensor should have come up.

SOURCE: My Nissan 200sx when I step on the gas it cuts out

The the airflow meter can shut off the car completely, it can also stop the car from reving over 2000rpm "limp mode" to save the engine from getting un-measured amounts of fuel.

My Xterra Won't Start

I find it dubious that a vehicle 13 years old only has 61 thousand miles on it. They are 4 cylinder engines and the belt needs to be changed every 65 thousand.

Our 2001 Nissan Xterra engine died at traffic light. Power seemed normal but engine will not run. 5 weeks ago we had it in for a tune up and oil change. Any thoughts on why it died and will not run when...

i assume that "power seemed normal" means that you can get engine to turn over, but not start.

possible problems: clogged fuel filter, bad fuel pump, water or other impurities in gasoline, foreign matter in gas tank, faulty "electronic distributor", possible blockage of adequate air supply, broken timing chain.

if i were to have to guess, it would be the timing chain, especially if car was running well prior to this problem.

For a 2001 nissan xterra when should the timing belt be replaced

On a 3.3L engine V-6, Nissan recommends replacement every 105,000 miles, note that this is an interference engine, that piston to valve damage will happen in the event of a timing belt failure.

Xterra with 2.4L and 4.0L have timing chain only, no timing belt.

When you took out the air filter you pulled off the snorkle to the throttle chamber. Just reinstall it and it should be fine.
