Did you take out the center bolt? You have to remove the center bolt, then use a harmonic balancer puller. Not the two or three armed pulley puller, but a harmonic balancer pulley puller-the pullers with jaws that hook around the outside of pulley can ruin a harmonic balancer.
Use the impact gun to remove the center bolt. You won't need an impact gun to remove the balancer pulley. The balancer puller will take it right off the crankshaft, no problem.

SOURCE: CRANK SHAFT PULLEY

Yes Auto zone have loaner crankshaft pulley extractor
better know as harmonic valancer puller.
you pay a deposit and when you bring it back the refund your money
do not use a bicycle chain like tool because that will damage your pulley. unless you are planing to install a brand new one.
there is a rubber ring in between the outer and inner part of the pulley than can be real easily damage.
you can temporary float one cylinder whit gasoline and cap it of whit the spark plug that will lock the engine temporarily when you have to turn the crankshaft bolt.
when you are done just remove the spark plug and turn the crankshaft to drain out the gasoline and unlock the engine.

SOURCE: I cannot remove the harmonic

you need a dodge puller it is the only type of puller you can use. when you get one you will see it comes with a set of shafts that go in the bolt hole to push ageist, a 1/2 impact also helps they are tight....GOOD LUCK

Harmonic balancer removal

Hello:

I have removed several of the harmonic balancer bolts, and it is difficult to hold the harmonic balancer from spinning when you remove the bolt. The bolt is normal thread, and removal is counterclockwise. There is a Honda holding tool you can get, or possibly borrow from a autoparts store. I always use either an impact wrench or a long breaker bar, and hold the harmonic balancer from rotating with a chain style wrench. I use an old belt to keep from damaging the damper pulley.
Good luck!

Need to replace the harmonic balancer on a 1992 odlsmobile 98 regency

A harmonic balancer puller-cheap and easy to use-available at any auto parts store. The hardest part is getting the crankshaft pulley bolt loose. An impact tool is best, but not absolutely necessary. Old school way: not recommended, but I've done it this way: put a socket and long stout breaker bar on the crank bolt. Let the breaker bar end rest on the ground. Now use the starter to just bump the engine over one quick time-just one little bump is all it takes to loosen the crank bolt- if you positioned the breaker bar right. Good luck, Joe.

Is there a special procedure for removing the harmonic balancer? i've tried several times using different methods to no avail. is the main bolt reverse threaded? tools used so far are a breaker bar, a...

The retaining bolt comes off in counter clockwise turn, they most likely used lock tight when it was installed and it is installed at probably 1200 lbs torque. the 21 gal compressor most likely doesn't have the power needed to remove that bolt. Once the bolt is removed you need the special tool to remove that balancer, it is a 3 leg pulley puller with a center insert that sits in the same hole that bolt comes out of and the pulley puller applies pressure to that insert while pulling the pulley off.

The crank balancer pulley needs to be removed so the crank sensor can be replaced. You will need an air impact wrench to remove the pulley bolt and a puller to remove the balancer.

Car starts when cold, but dies as soon as it warms up

By the crankshaft pulley towards front of car. The crankshaft pulley "balancer" will need to be removed to replace the sensor and you will need and air impact wrench to remove and replace the big bolt . Also you will need the correct balancer puller to remove the balancer.
