Backfired then quit

Chcek stuck or loose choke flaps and integrity of carb manifold gasket. Check the ignition coil cable (connected to the spark plug). The kill switch wires should not any crack that may touch the chassis ground.

Check the fuel pressure, and then see where youre at and if it is restricted from the pump or filter.
Next, try to see if you can get any codes out of the SUV. CEL can store any issues for quite some time, and it could be the MAF sensor, as that is very common with these.
I would also check into timing, it could be a few teeth off, pumping cylinders with fuel when they should be firing and causing this. And that is not good. At All.

Check your catalytic converter in front of your muffler..If it's clogged it will not let the exhaust out... Also check your distributor cap for cracks and components inside.. That will make it backfire..

if you spray intake cleaner into the intake with the air snorkel off and it starts then i would say you have a fuel pump problem.the backfiring was probably caused by the motor all of a sudden going lean.you will have to check the fuel pressure with a gage it should be about 35lbs pressure to run the car.if the pump needs replacing change the fuel filter.

it may be the fat red wire coming out of the bottom of the distributor which may of caused it to backfire. this not a 100 percent answer. maybe a possibility. good luck.

you are going to have to check for fuel pressure, usually cars only backfire when they are running lean. Push in on the shrader valve on the fuel rail, and have someone crank it for a second to see if you have fuel. Also check for spark.

catalatic converter may be clogged one way to find out is to drive it and after done shutoff and tapit a good one on the catalatic converter.

Sounds like timing belt broke
