Turn just the ignition on without starting the vehicle. Can you hear the fuel pump running? If not you could have a problem with the fuel pump or the fuse.

Ok. You have conflicting statements here. You say it won't crank. That is supposed to mean that the engine will not spin when the ignition switch is turned. Cranks but won't start sounds more like what you are getting at from the second statement that spraying gas in cause the engine to "hit" as you say. Am I to understand that you hooked the battery up backwards? If you did I'm very surprised you got that much to work. By your lack of knowledge of standard mechanic terminology, you come across as one who does not normally work on vehicles. I don't know what to tell you, but if you are careless (or ignorant) enough to hook the battery up backwards, the level of work that will be required to repair the electrical damage done by that act is most likely beyond your ability to execute. Take your car to a good mechanic or better yet, and auto electric service center.
depends how long it sat but yes if air gets in to fuel system that could start corrsion , make sure with volt tester that pump is getting power silly to replace pump when it might be a simple fuse or inertia switch to fix it
