Why car isn't blowing cool air except while driving fast?

Hello, so I'm pretty good at fixing things but not diagnosing them. At one point my air conditioning was working great and then I heard a pop when I was using it. The snowflake flashed usually representing low Freon. The Freon checkout out a little high but definitely not low. The car only blows cool air when I'm driving pretty fast. Its not enough to even cool off the car. Both fans are working, the clutch is kicking in, and its coolant is fine. Can anyone give me some ideas as to where to start troubleshooting?

If it's overcharged you could be killing the compressor to much freon is not a good thing on a pressured system

Are you saying the air coming out of the vents is not cold unless you are moving ? Or there is no air unless you are moving ?
And are you sure the radiator fan is running with the ac on ? Can you feel air being pulled thru the condenser ? What are the gauge readings with the ac on and the engine at idle ?

Testimonial: "air comes out when i turn it on (moving or not) and yes i'm sure the fan is coming on. it was off prior to the ac being on and as soon as i turned it on the fan went on. The tac reads at just over 1000 rpm before the ac is on and the just below 1000 rpm after it kicks in. (is that which gauge you are talking about?) and yes I can feel the air being pulled through the condenser. The only other thing that i really noticed was that as my fan strength gets turned to 3 or 4 I hear a slight pulsating sound. Not sure if the pertains to anything."

How did you check the freon charge ? Thats the gauges I was talking about. The high side should be around 200psi and the low side should be around 35psi at idle if the freon charge is ok and the system is working.

SOURCE: air conditioning compressor will not kick in,

If it is above 100PSI, you are over charged. Any thing under, should be normal to low. You probably need to get it checked by a professional to make sure it has the correct charge, and the compressor is getting power when the switch is turned on.

SOURCE: A/C blowing hot air while driving

Could be a vacuum line is busted. When you apply brakes it provides pressure to the system for freon to move and blow cold. Without that forced pressure freons not moving. I had that problem with a ford f150 and finding the busted vacuum line fixed it. It may be different with a mitsubishi, ask a local mechanic

Could be a blockage. Get an air-con specialist to blow the lines out. Check for any leaks from the rubber pipes. The twisting nature of AC pipes in cars can perish and if you have heard a blow out (like a tire blowout) the air con might have blown through a pipe.

Any leaves trapped in the windshield/hood gutter?

If my compressor wheel isn't spinning how do I know if it is the compressor or the ac clutch? System is charged but ac is blowing hot air

The question is: why isn't the compressor clutch turning

The compressor isn't likely seized,it may leak refrigerant,
but won't be what your asking.

The clutch can be jumped to test that

If okey, then you have to diagnose the entire
A/C Electrical System

How do you know it is properly charged, you put
refrigerant gauges on the system?

Car blows warm air when idling

It sounds like your AC unit could be overheating or even damaged.

AC units have a sensor that will turn them off automatically to prevent damage from overheating. If there is an insufficient amount of air flow, the unit will heat up, and then eventually turn off.

When the car is moving, more air is forced over the unit, likely keeping it cool enough to run, however, when the car come to a stop, it loses that air flow, and quickly heats up. Thus, the AC would work while the vehicle is in motion, and overheat and stop when the car is stopped and idling.

However, the AC unit could be completely blown. The cold air while moving could be just a case of air being forced into the car. Think of a house fan, the fast the wind blows on you, the cooler it gets.... Thus, it could be an illusion that the AC is working when car is in motion, when it really isn't.

Hope this helps.

How do i fix the low oil pressure issue im having. When i drive, the temp stays normal at 210 but when i idle, it goes up to 260. I was told the oil pressure is low and i needed a new engine

Your engine is overheating, which isn't directly related to oil pressure. I would take the S10 to a reputable/trusted mechanic and have him perform the following tests.
Compression Test Leak Down Test Coolant System Pressure Test Inspect Oil for Moisture (you can do this one, remove the dipstick, does the oil on it look like milk? If it looks like milk it means there is water/coolant in the oil, a sign of a blown head gasket. However not all head gaskets dump coolant into the oil when they blow) Inspect Clutch Fan for proper operation
The mechanic will know what those mean, It sounds like your head gaskets may be blown, which is why the engine would be overheating. Also if the Clutch Fan isn't working properly, it won't pull enough air through the radiator to keep the engine cool at an idle or while sitting still.
If the Head Gaskets are blown, it doesn't necessarily mean you need a new engine.
One other thing to note, when an engine overheats, the oil breaks down and no longer works as good as it used to.

Air conditioner blowing hot air and car overheating when idle

Air conditioning is one area where the owner generally is not qualified or equipped to perform the necessary repairs. If you are overheating and the ac isn't cooling I would check the condenser (radiator in front of the engine radiator) and made sure it's not obstructed. Also make sure that the electric fan comes on when you engage the A/C. Beyond that there isn't much you really can do except have an professional run a diagnostics on the system.

Air conditioner stopped blowing cool air. Added freon. Worked well for a few days. Now only blows cool air on passenger side.

Chances are you have a pretty fast freon leak, and the passenger side will be blowing warm within a few days. I have the same thing happen on a couple of my GM cars, except my leak is very slow; warm driver's side, cold passenger side.

You can try and top off the freon again, but I suspect you're going to have to take it to a shop to find the leak and get it fixed. Plan on spending some big dollars for the repair.

Good Luck.

Its probably low on freon....the cheep way is to go to WalMart and buy a R134 Freon refill kit, and try to refill it your self....hope this was helpful to you ???

I have the daul air conditioner and the driver side blows cool air, but the passager side blow hot air even if its on cool....help!

In the dash there are multiple "Mode Doors" that direct the flow of air in the dash for your AC. A duel zone system takes it further than that because it has doors for each zone.

Most likely, the temperature mode door for the passenger side isn't working properly because of a bad motor or other issue. There is a service bulletin on late model Chevrolet trucks that states as the motors age, they begin to work outside of the specified range the computer expects. As a result, they hang because the computer doesn't register them working correctly (out of range). It is recommended you have the vehicle software flashed to the latest configuration prior to diagnosing this issue as the new software takes the motor wear into account.

I have changed the thermostat, and Waterpump. But it is still overheating. Someone said that it might be the head gasket. Will that cost me alot of money? Will that sovle the problem?

Before you tackle the head gaskets I would check a couple other things first:
  • If you just replaced the thermostat and the water pump, that means that you've recently added coolant to the cooling system. I would check for air bubbles in the system by 'burping' it. In order to burb the system you need to open it up either at the radiator cap or at the bleeder valve. On a lot of cars you can find the bleeder valve by following the upper radiator hose to the thermostat. Slightly open the bleeder and squeeze the upper hose a few times to try and work out any air bubbles. You can also run the engine with the bleeder open or the cap off to try and circulate the coolant and allow any air to escape. Air bubbles in the system can cause overheating.
  • Another thing you can check are your fans. Run your car for a while at idle to allow it to heat up. When it gets to the point where it starting to overheat check your cooling fans to see if they're running. If they're not, chances are that the coolant temperature sensor has gone bad which is fairly inexpensive and easy to fix.

If it does end up being the head gaskets then yes, that would cost a lot of money to repair. Let's hope that's not it.

Good Luck!
