I would have it looked at immediately if you have a loud knocling sound, these things have a tendency of breaking the crankshaft just behind the balancer or pulley on the front of the crankshaft. If it breaks totally off it will leave you stranded. It is under the lower intake manifold in the valley of the engine.You
must remove the cross over coolant tube to gain access to the knock
sensor. It bolts into the cylinder head. Good luck
it's in the valley of the engine. Do not ever replace it even if you get a code. A knock sensor will NEVER casue a driveabiity problem. It only retards timing 6 degrees if it senses spark knock. It also sets a code if an engine mount is broken and the engine rocks up and down on acceleration.
This can be a power steering belt loose or the power steering pump malfunction. To check if it's a belt problem with engine running open the hood and pour a small ampunt of water (1/4 gal or a bit less) over the belt located on the left side of the engine if the sound lowers then it's most likely the belt only.
The only four rotating items under the hood are
engine
power steering pump
A/C compressor
and smog emission pump.
====
I would check the fluid level on the power steering first. Check for pink fluid leak on the ground,
====
Check the A/C system with the wheel turn to one side and APPLY ALL LOADS.
Example: high beam on,A/C max,radio on and deforster on.
This will give you system a stress test.
All eyes on the pully and locate to part that generate the loud screeching noise.
My bet is on the power steering pump.

I will follow up on it.
