1992 Toyota Camry Rough Idle

Hi,

I have a 1992 Toyota Camry. When in park or drive the car has a very rough idle, fluctuating between 600-1000 RPM. At times it dips even lower, towards 250 RPM, as if it is going to stall, before jumping back up. This causes the car to shake vigorously. This problem seems to be progressing, seeing as for the past few days the car stalls when shifting from park into reverse. It has also stalled while in drive, forcing me to put the car into park and start it again. Do you have any idea what may be causing this problem? Thanks for you help.

Start by pulling hose off egr valve see if idles smoother almost instantly

check and see if any vacume line may have fallen off or gotten disconnected or may dry rotted.Hope this helps.

Some times this problem related to defective spark plugs or spark plugs wires or dirty air filter or fuel filter

Clean the throttle body bore and plate of any carbon deposits. Also, clean and check the IAC idle air control circuit . If it has electronic controlled throttle body it will not have the IAC. Carbon deposits around the throttle body bore and plate (butterfly) can restrict airflow at idle causing the low uneven idle.

Why does my 1989 camry 2.2 4 cylinder at initial start-up idle smooth, but upon warm-up idle rough and erratically.

Clean throttle body might help
ck alt 12.5 iDle 13.5 1000 rpm
also run gas low and put fresh new gas gas add'
replace cap rotor wires.ck for obd codes.Let me know

High RPM idle in park after changing intake manifold gaskets that were causing a rough idle. The rough idle is gone but not the car idles in park at 1500-1700 rpm. In gear everything is fine.

check map senser if thats good check your fuel filter

get a trouble code from Autozone or other store for free. It sounds like a sensor problem to me. The Idle Position sensor for example.

your probably feeling a rough idle of the engine. need a tune up?

in park the engine is not loaded down, just idling at a low rpm=rough
in drive with brake on you have put some load on motor also at low rpm=rough
in drive on the road engine is at higher rpm, = smoother

generally 4 cylinder motors idle a bit rough, especially if one spark plug is not firing right or fouled or one bad spark plug wire. tune up may fix it. if it is not stumbling real bad or stalling then you can live with it.
