Hi John, These days most oils are formulated to be used in both petrol and diesel engines but those formulated specifically for diesels should not be mixed. If your talking of a top up I suggest a flush with a good quality chemical and a lub service. If you have had a service carried out and changed the type of oil the same applies. Mixing oils can cause fast sludge build up which can block the filter, oil pump and galleries. These days most oils are designed to run both types of engine, but mixing is neve a good idea. Regards John

SOURCE: What type of engine oil is used for a diesel

go to any auto parts store, like an auto zone and tell them what you are driving. They have a data base which will guarantee that you get the exact oil that you need.

I use Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5W-40 , a fully synthetic supreme performance heavy duty diesel engine oil that helps extend engine life while providing long drain capability and potential fuel economy for modern diesel engines operating in severe applications. Mobil Delvac 1 ESP utilizes state-of-the-art technology to deliver exceptional performance in modern low emission engines, including those with Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and Aftertreatment systems with Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF’s) and Diesel Oxidation Catalysts (DOC’s). Therefore we believe it will be a good oil for the high mileage vehicles with the proper care for your vehicles as recommended by your manufacturers' guidelines.

SOURCE: Can I use Mobil Delvac super 15w - 40 oil in a 1.3

You can use whatever brand of oil you like. The important thing is to choose the right grade of oil or viscosity. If you are in a very cold climate this oil would probably not be suitable at all - too thick. On the other hand, a in a hot climate this would be OK. The Manufacturer's recommended grade for your climate will be in the owner's manual.

SOURCE: engine oil and tyre pressures

use 10W30W, that is the heaviest oil this engine needs, thicker oils can damage the bearings due to oil starvation, as far as tire pressure goes 30- 32 PSI is best for this little car.

Nissan Wingroad Y12. Any one has knowledge of Wingroad Y12 decreasing engine oil as I use Amsoil 0W30. As it covered only 100,000. No oil leaks has been found.

It is the wrong oil. Too thin when cold.

The numbers refer to the weight and thickness, or viscosity, of the oil. Motor oil gets thicker when it's cold and thinner when it heats up. The first number indicates the viscosity of the oil at a cold temperature, and the second number indicates the viscosity at operating temperatures.

Is it 10W-40 or 15W-40 Engine oil for 1998 Nissan Bluebird. Many Thanks Suman Roy

Either one will not damage the engine. If there is less than 50,000 miles on it then stick with 10W40. Higher mileage engines will do better on 15W40

Hi i would just like to know what oil i can use in my 1989 toyota surf its a turbo diesel the manual says to use a sae 20w/40 cd or better but when i went to buy oil they sold me a 15w -40 api ch-4 is this...

Hi Sarah,

The 15W-40 apiCH-4 oil will be fine for your 4Runner. It is "better", and here is why....

Your new oil being "ch" grade vs "cd" meets the qualification of "better" grade oil. Oil detergents are constantly being modified and as the letters climb alphabetically, each higher letter means that the oil exceeds the requirements of the grade before it. The "-4" is a designation I do not recognize, so I have some more reading to do. It may just mean that you bought a 4 quart (or liter) container or package, but no matter what it represents, this oil is still better.
The "15W-40" designation means that at 0 degrees F or below, the oil behaves as if it is 15 weight oil, and at operating temperatures, it acts like 40 weight oil. This formulation is designed to make cold weather starting easier, since the oil will be "thinner". Since your new oil is still rated as 40 weight at operating temperatures, just like the manual specifies, You should do fine with it.
Make sure you check your oil level once a week, since your 4Runner has a few years on it, it may be "burning" more oil from normal engine wear.
It is very important to change your oil regularly, especially with a diesel engine. The oil picks up allot of contaminants and it gets dirty very fast in a diesel. Follow the oil change schedule in your manual, and you will be good2go!
Thank You for using FixYa!

I have a five speed, and I need to find out what the suggested weight of oil I need to put in it.... it isn't a diesel, but I have been told to put in 15w-40...

It depends where you live. If you live in a cold climate then a 0w50 would be best. If you live in the UK 10w40 or US 15w40. Check the owners handbook too to see what VW recommend.

My valves are ticking on my 97 doge 2500 pick up it has the 360 magnum can i adjust them or not .....

Ticking sound is normal from a health diesel engine is normal.

Diesel engine that does a lot of towing or carry large payload can use a head adjustment every 2 years or 24,000 miles.

I would keep tabs on the valve cover for oil leak.

Take it in the shop when the valve cover start to leak.

Do the valve adjustment, the valve cover and oil change at the same time.

Shell ROTELLA T Multigrade SAE 15W-40 is my prefer motor oil.

I had a similar problem in my Mondeo 1.8 TD a few years ago  and this was cured by changing the engine oil and filter to the correct type.

I had used the special  Duckhams 10w-40w Turbo Diese (or was it 15w-40w?) l oil  but once I changed it to the correct Ford 5w-30w (Formula-E ) ordinary oil, the turbo worked a treat every time.( I understand now that there is an even "thinner" option that works even better so worth checking ....Something like a 1w-30w )

A strange answer I know, but true

The only reason I used the Duckhams was because the chap in Halfords said it was the best one for a Turbo Diesel
