Bad lock actuator: (NOTE: If your hatch is locked)
First remove rear panel- pull the plastic panel at the top center, until (2)clips pop off, then pop (2) more clips at the mid-center. Stick your arm down until you reach the lock, with your fingers, feel for the squishy plastic( inside is the bar that goes up to unlock), it is attached to the lever to unlock. Pull up the lever until you can open the hatch. There are four more clips at the top sides and middle sides, and four plastic screws at the bottom which is only accessible when the hatch is opened.
The lock is only sold as an assembly at $100.

Climb into the cargo area. The plastic panel is secured by 4 screws accessible only from the bottom edge of the hatch as well as about 10 clips. The object is to get your fingertips between the glass and the panel and pull inward (toward front of vehicle). The clips will pop loose if you pull hard enough. Once you have the panel pulled away, look for a whitish box with a plunger coming out the top of it. Move the plunger with your finger. I believe when locked, the plunger is out, and unlocked, the plunger is in. I believe you will find the solenoid coil has burned out and will need to be replaced. I can't believe Ford was so cheap to not include some sort of mechanical release like Chevy did on the Corvette hatch. I read this solution on another site yesterday and put it to the test tonight on my daughter-in-laws 2001 Escape, so I know it works. I don't think the later years are much different.

I HAVE A 2009 FORD ESCAPE AND THE REAR HATCH WILL NOT OPEN FUSE IS GOOD. PLEASE HELP ME.

You need a latch assembly. Common problem. Open the hatch glass. Then try and lift up and push forward the plastic door panel around the spot where the glass closes into the hatch. It should give you enough room to see the latch assembly inside. Use a flashlight to look for the latch which is in the center bottom of the hatch. There is a white plastic lever. Push or pull on the lever and the door should open. The latch has a electric actuator that goes bad. Only replaced as a latch assembly.

Tailgate will not unlock

It is the rear door lock actuator. It controls the window and hatch lock. Unfortunately the actruator is a dealer item and Ford does not sell the actuator by itself. You have to putchase the entire latch assembly whic comes with the actuator. It will run you about $150 for parts.

The rear hatch door won't open either with the remote or with the switch inside on the dash. As well, the hatch door handle won't open the door from inside.

After a while, the mechanism (actuator) that unlocks and releases the rear glass hatch in your Blazer or Jimmy will eventually burn out. when it does, there is really no way to open the glass and lower the tailgate.
The only way to replace the burnt out actuator is to open the tailgate which you can't because the actuator is burnt out.

I've read stories that even the dealers don't know what to do, some have even cut up the back panel to reach the so-called manuel release. Others said they pulled back the glued on carpet to search for it also.

Well if you don't want to hack up the tailgate panel or rip out your carpet, here's the easy way to open the glass:

You just pull back the interior tailgate panel right above the bump in the middle where the latch is. There are no screws or bolts in that area, you can safely pull it back about 2 inches. Then you'll have to stuck your finger in and push down the release bar.

When you get your finger back there, you should be able to feel for the part that need to be pushed down. When that part is pushed down, the glass has been unlocked.

When you get your finger back there, you should be able to feel for the part that need to be pushed down. When that part is pushed down, the glass has been unlocked.

Good luck and hope this helps, The actuator that needs to be replaced costs $58 from the dealer.
