Are you talking about a cv shaft for your 4X4 or a car? Car=stays parked. If its a cv shaft you can fully remove the shaft possibly and leave the four wheel drive alone and be fine till you get it fixed. Leaving it hang can cause other issues to arise

Yes, you can replace the front axle on a Mercury Grand Marquis. All cars have two axles whether they are front wheel or rear wheel drive.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SOURCE: 2004 Nissan Titan.....My front driver side axle

This failure has NO temporary fix, it is caused by the front axle "C" clip retainer failing, in the process it destroys the front differential, this is a factory defect and has been reported by 100's of 2004-2006 Titan owners, a new front differential assembly is required to fix the failure, sorry to give the bad news, what I would do is contact the local Nissan dealer and see if the factory will help with the cost of the repair or contact the Nissan customer service hotline number in your owners manaul, it is a pattern failure and I believe it has been reported to the US Department of Transportation Safety Board.
Below you will find a link to Nissan truck owners Forum, the entire thread is about the axle problems, I would read it if i were you.

1994 geo prizm replaced drive axle and wheel bearings and it sounds like the drver side axle is binding or broken or not in all the way it makes a loud knocking from the driverside like the axle is hitting...

I see there are two different axles listed, with and without abs. One is slightly longer than the other. You could have the wrong axle or it could be something inside the transmission. I doubt the passenger side axle would affect the driver side.
Can you raise the front end and make the noise with the car parked ?

07 mountaineer awd front end noise more from driver side. Sounds like the drivetrain. What should I look for.

Check the front drive shaft u-joint, and front cv shafts on the front axle, may be worn and need to be replaced. These parts will make a clicking or popping noise may sound like a thud sound.

Clicking noise down by the front tires.

check your axles, for an open cv boot, this clicking is on straigth or turning, if turming to your rigth you hear noise to be louder on your left then your left axle is bad, do the same to your left and if noise exists then your rigth axle is bad.good luck

The inner axle just pries out for a snap ring is installed on the inner part of the shaft to keep it in place. Use a screwdriver to pop it out near the trns housing or attach a puller on the outer shaft to pop it out

I have a 97 trans sport and when i drive it it pops real loud, and almost feels like passenger side front end jumps

check your front wheel drive axles/half shafts, see if the rubber boots that cover the bearings are not torn or missing.. sounds like you might need to replace the axle/half shaft on the passengers side

How to change a front axel do i have to lifft it off the ground

it doesnt have to be lifted but is much easier if is. The axle will have to be unbolted from the cv shaft. there are 6 15mm bolts that hold the two together. once these are seperated, tie the cv shaft out of the way and tap on the axle to get it out of the differential housing. It should pop out because there is just a ring on the end of the splines that pops into a groove. this is all on the drivers side. The passenger side is a different story. seperating the cv shaft and the axle is the same but instead of popping the axle out, the housing has to be removed. It is also 15mm bolts 6 0r 7 of them . The 4 wheel drive actuator will also have to be disconnected and there are two nuts on the opposite end from the center section of the diff.
