If there is no free play on the clutch pedal that mean the clutch disc have gone ,or adjust the clutch pedal.

you may have a clutch problem. If it doesnt slip, I would keep driving it. 33k is awfully young to need a clutch unless its been abused...... The engine does NOT have to come out, I dont know who told you that BS???? its no different than any other rwd car.

SLACKEN the clutch cable. I had the same problem with my wife`s Legacy - as the clutch plate wears, the cable tightened up. It started to slip. When I asked the Subaru dealer to adjust it they TIGHTENED it even more, and said the clutch was slipping because worn out, and needed replacing. It took three minutes to slacken it off myself and the car has now done another 20,000 miles with no clutch problems. No wonder Subarus are now so rare in rural areas! A clutch is usually adjusted from underneath the car if it's a mechanical clutch.

Your comment that there is very little play at the top indicates an improperly adjusted clutch. You should have about 1/2 - 3/4 inch of play before feeling the clutch in the pedal.
