SOURCE: how do i replace the radiator fan relay in an 05 town and country

this van has a solid state relay unit to control the fan, when it dies it just allows the fans to run. this relay is located behind drivers headlight, attached to the bumper towards the grill. It will either be bolted on or riveted on. There will be big fins on it to keep it cool. When you change this unit you have to mount it for it to work right (zip ties are no good) seen that before.

SOURCE: radiator fan doesn´t work. i would

Check you fan test the rad fans on a hot wire from the battery. If it runs with direct connection from battery that means fan is actually working but any of the other fan connecting parts internally are not letting the fan to work. But if fan does not work when you manually test it by connecting it to 12 volt battery then ,yes the fan is faulty and it needs to be replaced. But if fan isa working then the other parts to be checked are fan relay.Sounds like you need a new fan relay. This relay is NOT in the fuse/relay box under the hood. It is bolted to the radiator support, under the air filter box. ----------- Actually there are many other users facing this same problem Due to faulty fan relay. It was a recall by Chrysler voyager company ,because many of the users face the same problem. But the recall was for the car made in the year 1996.But your problem is same as that.I will mention what company has mentioned in its service bulletin:------ There was a Recall on the fan relay:------
Radiator Fan Motor - Relay Operation
NO: 08-34-96
GROUP: Electrical
DATE: Oct. 25, 1996
SUBJECT:
Radiator Fan Relay Operation
MODELS:
1996 - 1997 (NS) Town & Country/Caravan/Voyager
1996 - 1997 (GS) Chrysler Voyager (International Market)
DISCUSSION:
Conditions related to the radiator fan relay may result in the radiator fans not turning "ON" or not turning "OFF" as designed.
The screws that mount the relay to the left front frame rail may break causing the relay to overheat and turn off because it no longer has heat sinking capability to the frame rail. If broken radiator fan relay screws are found, they must be replaced with revised screw P/N 06035202. Also, the relay may have been damaged because of the overheating (but may still be functioning) caused by the lack of heat sinking and should be replaced.
Some vehicles may have an intermittent interference condition between the radiator fan blade(s) and the fan shroud that causes a high current draw that will fail the radiator fan relay. The relay can fail in an open condition preventing the fan motors from running and causing the engine to overheat. The relay can fail in a closed condition causing the radiator fans to continue to run with the ignition switch turned "OFF". If a failed radiator fan relay is found, it must be replaced with revised relay P/N 04886288AA AND screws P/N 06035202. Revised relay P/N 04886288AA has a higher current capacity that is able to handle the extra current draw related to the intermittent radiator fan/shroud interference.
A small number of vehicles may have corrosion develop in the radiator fan relay connector. On vehicles with this condition, the radiator fan relay connector should be replaced using pigtail service package P/N 04897034AA.
So as per your problem mentioned i think its a relay for radiator fan, that has to be replaced. The cost of new relay is near to $80.Replace the relay and it will work. On some Chrysler car models the relay is inside the engine bay bolted to front of the engine bay behind the bumper under the main air filter housing. Its fitted with 2 bolts.Just follow the fan wires.it connects to the relay. But if your relay checks out ok and working then,Problem is related to pcm. power train conrol module not sending a "turn me on signal" to the relay. Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

Aside from getting into an accident and having your wiring harness severely damaged, the other likely suspect is your PCM. These codes are not related to each other and indicate a much larger problem.

P1491 diagnostics code for 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Trouble Code: P1491 You PCM does not sense current to radiator fan when it turns it on. Is the fan coming on or not? Usually not when you have this code. Problem can be with the fuse, relay, wiring or fan itself. First check the fuse. If good, next try swapping the relay with another one in the engine compartment relay box, such as the horn relay.
Let the car warm up and see if the fan will come on. If yes, get a new relay. If not, either use a test light to see if there is voltage at the fan connector when the engine is on and hot, or else test the fan motor by hotwiring it to the battery. If none of this works, please get back to me for how to troubleshoot the wiring.

I took my 99 dodge grand caravan to advanced auto and got a computer readout of p1491 as the error code. is this important and is this expensive?

P1491 is Radiator Fan Control Relay Circuit. MEANING: An open or shorted condition detected in the low speed radiator fan control circuit.
Some questions for you:
1. Is your Caravan overheating?
2. Is your Caravan water temperature spiking going past the midway point on the Temp Gauge before the radiator is engaged?
3. Is your Rad Fan coming-on and then turning off and back-on in a very short period of time (like under a minute?
If all of these are "No" then do not worry about it.
