I had a 1997 Mitsubishi Galant, and I had this problem. My radio had a tape deck. The model type of my Radio was MR238340.
To do this Job you will need a medium sized phillips head screwdriver.

First of all you will need the radio code. To get this you need the model type and serial # of the radio. these are printed on a label on the top of the radio. To get the numbers pop off the cover plate aroung the gear shift. Yo will see 2 screws on the radio side of the gear shift. Remove these. The faceplate around the radio and the ashtray will pop off. There might be wires connected to the rear defog button and the cig lighter. I did not remove these. I just pulled the faceplate back as far as I could to get to the radio. Remove the 4 screws holding the radio to the console. I found a diagram with pictures on how to do this on the internet. I did not have to pull the radio out completely to get the numbers, only about 1&1/2 inches. the label was on the front left side of the top of the radion. Write down the serial # and the model number (usually starts in MR). With these numbers you can call the service dept of your local Mitsu dealer and they will give you the number over the phone.

The second step is to get rid of the off message. If you are like me you tried and failed to enter the wrong code and after the third try you got locked out. To be able to re- enter the code leave the radio on with the off message for 1 hour uninterrupted, and you will be prompted to re-enter the code. Enter the code using the first four numbers (radio station preset buttons). So to enter the first number press the # 1 button until you see the desired # ( the numbers will count up 1, 2, 3 etc.) . The enter the second # by pressing the #2 button. Enter the third with #3 and so on. Once all 4 numbers are entered the manual tells you to hit button #4. THEY DO NOT MEAN THE #4 BUTTON. In the service manual (which may still be in your glove compartment) you will see a diagram of the radio, and they have assigned each button a number. My number 4 button was the top button of 3 vertical buttons on the left hand side of the tape deck. It had a word on it, (tape? maybe). once you have entered the 4 numbers hit this button and the radio should work.

Mitsubishi wanted $98.00 to do this repair when I called. One person I spoke to would not give me the code and said I had to bring the car in. I called the next day and spoke to someone else in the service department who got me the number in 3 minutes for free. There are web sites that will get you your code provided that you have the model type and serial number, but they charge $20 to $40. I'm not cheap, but I am broke, and this fix was not that difficult. I am not a mechanic, I barely have a pulse, and I did this. You can too.

SOURCE: radio reset

If you don't have the code, you probably will have to pay a dealer to get it for you. My dealer said it was on the back of the radio and he had to remove it to find it. I have no idea if this is true.

As to the other problem of entering the code 3 times, and it now showing "off" instead. Simply put your ignition in the accessory position for approximately one hour. "Code" will magically reappear.

This applies to the 2000 Gallant. My code is 7357 if you wish to try it.

I need the code to unlock the radio on my daughters 97 mitsubishi galant, can you help?

You will most likely have to go to the dealer as these are not universal codes. These are security codes. I would suggest going to your local dealer or take the serial number from the back of the radio and calling up mitsubishi.
Hope i could help.

Radio code

GETTING THE RADIO SERIAL NUMBER: <BR>
don't know an easy way to get the radio serial number, find a radio install savy person and ask them to help you. My dealership said they would do it for me and charge me for 30-60 mins worth of labor.. (At $75/hour) <BR> <BR>
RADIO SAYS "OFF" OR "LOCK": <BR>
Leave the "off" display on for 1 hour uninterupted, then it will automatically reset back to UNLOCK CODE.
<BR> When you turn it back on again after that time has passed it will ask for "code". <BR> <BR>
RADIO SAYS "UNLOCK CODE:" <BR>
Call your local MItsubishi dealership and ask for the service department.
<BR>They have a computer program where they punch in the serial number from your radio (you have to supply the number) and it will tell them the UNLOCK CODE for your radio. My dealership offered to give it to me free over the phone, if I knew my radio serial number. Enter the code using the buttons on your radio. And write the code down, this will show up everytime your radio looses connection to its power source - the car battery.
