the idle RPM is too high or its just too cold, how cold is it outdoors? idle speeds cold can be about 1500 RPM/ cold. and will ****. it jerks because you are taking 0 torque from engine and the sending that to a stalled rear axle. this cause a ****, that is why the park lock out requires Brakes on so yo dont run over things.
You don't, unless it's ridiculously high, like over 1750 rmp. Most cars will idle higher in drive then they do in park. The next time you get caught at a light put it in park and let it sit, it may go higher at first but most lower below what it was idling.
